Chapter 12 - THE PLAN THAT STARTED BEFORE WE MET

The conspiracy had begun before Clare and Nathaniel fell in love.

Before the rooftop bar.

Before the coffee shop.

Before their first kiss.

Douglas Ashcroft and Victoria Bowmont had been watching Clare because of her research.

The investigators uncovered a strategy document identifying her as a potential threat to Project Meridian.

The document outlined plans to discredit her if she exposed the program.

Financial manipulation.

False allegations.

Professional damage.

And surveillance.

Then, after Nathaniel began dating her, the plan changed.

Clare became more than a researcher.

She became a way to influence the Ashcroft succession.

Nathaniel stared at the documents.

“My father used me.”

Clare looked at him.

“He used both of us.”

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

The realization was devastating.

He'd spent his life believing his father controlled every situation because he was intelligent.

Now he understood how cruel that control could become.

The investigators continued gathering evidence.

But the family remained dangerous.

Douglas still possessed wealth.

Victoria still had connections.

And Eleanor remained determined to preserve the Ashcroft dynasty.

Then Clare received another message.

From an unfamiliar number.

I can help you.

She hesitated.

Another message appeared.

I know where your mother's original files are.

Clare stared at the screen.

Then typed:

Who are you?

The reply arrived immediately.

Eleanor Ashcroft.

Clare stopped breathing.

Nathaniel's mother.

The woman who had defended Douglas.

The woman who had treated Clare like something disposable.

Why would she suddenly offer help?

Clare showed Nathaniel.

He looked stunned.

“She never admits wrongdoing.”

Clare swallowed.

“Maybe something changed.”

They arranged to meet Eleanor in a public setting with counsel present.

The following afternoon, Eleanor arrived looking older than Clare remembered.

Her perfect posture remained.

But her hands trembled slightly.

“I owe you an apology,” Eleanor said.

Clare stared.

“For what?”

“For treating you as though your life mattered less than our family name.”

Nathaniel watched his mother carefully.

Eleanor continued.

“I believed Douglas when he told me the company would collapse if Meridian was exposed.”

Clare's expression hardened.

“That doesn't excuse what happened.”

“No.”

For the first time, Eleanor didn't argue.

She placed a folder on the table.

“Your mother collected evidence before she died.”

Clare reached for it.

Inside were internal communications, patient assistance records, and a handwritten statement from Margaret Whitmore.

Tears filled Clare's eyes.

Her mother's handwriting.

Her mother's courage.

Her mother's final effort to protect people she would never meet.

Eleanor looked at Nathaniel.

“Douglas knows you're cooperating.”

He nodded.

“I am.”

“He's frightened.”

“Good.”

Eleanor swallowed.

“Victoria is frightened too.”

Clare frowned.

“Why?”

Eleanor looked toward the window.

“Because Harrison Bowmont has decided the merger must happen at any cost.”

Nathaniel's expression darkened.

“What does that mean?”

Eleanor's voice broke.

“He believes the child must never be born into the Ashcroft inheritance.”

Clare felt sick.

May you like

Then Eleanor whispered:

“And Victoria has already arranged for Clare to be brought to the family estate tomorrow.”
