Chapter 11 - THE APPOINTMENT THAT WASN'T MINE

Clare stared at her obstetrician.
“A procedure?”
Dr. Melissa Harper nodded.
“A request appeared in our scheduling system under your name. It was flagged because the authorization information didn't match.”
Clare felt cold.
“I never requested anything.”
“I know.”
Nathaniel sat beside her.
His hands were clenched.
“What kind of request?”
The doctor explained that the record appeared intended to create confusion about Clare's pregnancy care.
The clinic had blocked the request and notified its privacy and security officers.
Clare covered her mouth.
Someone was trying to interfere with her medical treatment.
Again.
Just as people had interfered with her mother's.
Nathaniel looked toward the doctor.
“Is the baby okay?”
Dr. Harper nodded.
“Today's examination is reassuring. But we need to ensure Clare's records remain protected.”
Clare exhaled shakily.
Nathaniel reached for her hand.
She let him take it.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Clare whispered:
“Your family won't stop.”
Nathaniel's eyes filled with pain.
“I know.”
“What are we going to do?”
He looked at her.
“Something I should have done a long time ago.”
That afternoon, Nathaniel met with independent counsel and investigators.
He provided internal documents.
Financial records.
Communications involving Douglas, Eleanor, and Victoria.
And information about the suspicious medical research program.
He didn't try to protect the Ashcroft name.
He didn't negotiate silence.
He told the truth.
Even when it exposed his own negligence in signing documents he hadn't properly reviewed.
The investigation expanded.
Several executives were suspended.
Regulators began examining Project Meridian.
And the board demanded explanations from Douglas Ashcroft.
But Clare still wasn't safe.
One evening, she returned to her Brooklyn apartment and found a small package outside her door.
Inside was a baby blanket.
Pale yellow.
Soft.
Beautiful.
At first, she thought Nathaniel had sent it.
Then she noticed a card.
For the child who will never inherit anything.
Her hands began shaking.
She immediately called Nathaniel.
He arrived with the security team assigned through the investigation.
Clare showed him the card.
His expression hardened.
“Victoria.”
“We don't know that.”
Nathaniel looked at her.
For a moment, the old anger threatened to take control.
Then he nodded.
“You're right.”
He contacted the investigators.
They preserved the package as evidence.
But the next morning, a new development changed everything.
A former Meridian accountant came forward.
She had financial records showing that Victoria Bowmont received substantial payments from the pharmaceutical division.
The payments began before Nathaniel met Clare.
And several were linked to medical assistance cases.
Including Margaret Whitmore's.
Clare stared at the report.
Then the accountant showed her one final document.
A private agreement signed by Victoria and Douglas.
Underneath the signatures was a handwritten condition.
“If Clare Whitmore becomes pregnant, the contingency plan must be activated.”
May you like
Clare felt her heart stop.
Because the agreement was dated eighteen months before she conceived.
