Chapter 8 - VANESSA WAS TESTING DANIEL TOO

The envelope included a note.
Emily—
You think I’m the only one lying to you.
I’m not.
Call me before 8 a.m.
No signature.
Didn’t need one.
I called at 6:30.
Margaret sat beside me.
Vanessa answered immediately.
“Are you alone?”
“No.”
“Who’s there?”
“Margaret.”
Silence.
Then:
“Fine.”
I said:
“Why the contract?”
Vanessa exhaled.
“Because Daniel kept promising he was leaving you.”
“So you made him pay if he didn’t?”
“I needed to know whether he meant it.”
That was not romantic.
It was transactional.
“Why $250,000?”
“Because that’s what he said he could access without touching the trust.”
There it was.
Vanessa had been measuring his finances.
Then she said something unexpected.
“I’m not going to defend sleeping with your husband.”
Good start.
“But I did not know about the LLC.”
I looked at Margaret.
“Which LLC?”
“Your house.”
So Vanessa knew now.
Not before.
Daniel had told each woman a different plan.
To me:
Refinancing.
To Vanessa:
Emily keeps the house.
Reality:
House transferred into Daniel-controlled entity.
“Why send me this?”
Vanessa became quiet.
“Because yesterday he asked me to sign something.”
“What?”
“Reed Legacy Holdings amendment.”
She had refused.
The amendment would have increased Daniel’s control over the company after the Bennett trust payment.
Not Vanessa’s.
Daniel was not simply paying her family.
He wanted equity.
He planned to convert $1.8 million of family trust money into a stake in Reed Legacy.
The company owned something valuable.
What?
Vanessa hesitated.
“Land.”
Where?
South Side industrial property.
Robert sat forward.
“What address?”
I repeated it.
He went white.
The property sat beside a major redevelopment corridor.
A city infrastructure proposal, still confidential publicly, would likely multiply its value.
How did Daniel know?
He worked in municipal finance consulting.
He had access to planning discussions.
My stomach turned.
This was bigger.
He wanted to use trust money to buy into undervalued land before redevelopment became public.
Vanessa’s grievance story gave him cover.
An “old family settlement.”
Then property exploded in value.
Daniel wins.
Vanessa gets money.
Her family regains symbolic ownership.
Everybody except me benefits.
Then Vanessa said:
“There’s something else.”
Of course.
“Daniel told me you agreed to separate.”
I laughed.
“When?”
“Two months ago.”
“What did he show you?”
“An email.”
I never wrote one.
She forwarded it.
From an address resembling mine.
emily.bennett.official@—
Not my email.
Message:
I know Daniel and I are done. I only want the house and privacy.
Forged identity.
Not legally binding.
Emotionally useful.
He had convinced Vanessa I already knew.
That did not excuse her.
She still saw me at the mall and said “finally.”
But it changed part of the story.
Then Vanessa said:
“I’m meeting Daniel at ten.”
“So am I.”
Silence.
Margaret smiled.
“Excellent.”
Vanessa whispered:
“What are you planning?”
Margaret answered for me.
“Nothing dramatic.”
Then:
“We’re going to let Daniel explain himself.”
At 9:54, all three of us entered the same lawyer’s conference room.
May you like
Daniel was already seated.
When he saw Vanessa walk in behind me, every drop of color left his face.
