Chapter 6 - NOAH WAS NOT DANIEL'S SON

I expected the test to say Daniel was Noah’s father.

It didn’t.

That would have been simpler.

Daniel came home at seven.

I said nothing.

Margaret said nothing.

Robert said nothing.

Daniel ate dinner believing everyone remained exactly where he had placed them.

Afterward, he left his laptop charging in the den.

We did not open it.

We did not need to.

Vanessa sent another email to the shared home computer.

Attachment:

PATERNITY_REPORT_2017.pdf.

Daniel was not Noah’s biological father.

Probability:

0%.

I stared.

“Then why hide it?”

Margaret asked.

Robert answered first.

“Because Daniel may have believed he was.”

But the test was eight years old.

Noah had been one.

Daniel knew almost from the beginning.

Then we read the attached email chain.

Vanessa:

You promised the result would never change what you wanted for him.

Daniel:

It doesn’t. He deserves better than Charles’s mess.

Charles.

Vanessa’s father?

No.

Age impossible.

Then another name appeared.

Noah’s biological father:

ERIC REED.

Vanessa’s ex-husband.

So why was Daniel involved?

More emails.

Daniel had helped pay Noah’s preschool.

Medical bills.

Private school deposit.

Not from marital accounts initially.

From personal bonuses.

Then, two years ago, he began using joint credit cards.

He had built a quasi-parental role in secret.

I felt betrayed.

Not because he cared about a child.

Because he built another family while telling me overtime kept him away.

Then I found the crucial email.

Vanessa:

Once you and Emily are separated, Noah can finally stop pretending you’re just Uncle Daniel.

My throat tightened.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Robert muttered something furious.

Daniel was planning a family.

Not legally as Noah’s father.

Emotionally.

Then Vanessa wrote:

And maybe later we can revisit adoption.

That explained the apartment.

Two bedrooms.

One for Vanessa.

One for Noah.

I almost cried.

Then another message.

Daniel:

After Dad’s trust opens, money won’t be a problem. Emily will keep the house if she cooperates.

I laughed.

“He’s giving me my own house now?”

Robert looked at the quitclaim draft.

“No.”

“He’s not.”

Exactly.

Once transferred into the LLC, Daniel could burden it.

He could later offer to “let” me keep a property carrying debt or collateral obligations.

He was preparing to look generous.

Then Margaret said:

“There’s something wrong.”

“What?”

“Why would Vanessa need Daniel’s family trust if her divorce already gave her support?”

Good question.

We pulled public divorce records.

Vanessa had not received child support.

Because Eric Reed had disappeared overseas after the divorce.

But one financial affidavit caught Robert’s attention.

Eric listed an ownership interest in:

REED LEGACY HOLDINGS.

The same company Daniel wanted to pay $1.8 million.

Vanessa was not sole manager.

Her ex-husband still owned forty-nine percent.

If Daniel moved trust money into Reed Legacy, almost half could indirectly benefit the man Vanessa claimed had abandoned her.

That made no sense.

Unless the payment was never really about Vanessa.

Then Robert found Eric Reed’s full legal name.

Eric Charles Reed Jr.

Charles Reed’s son.

Vanessa had married her own father’s business partner’s son?

No.

Robert stared.

“Vanessa’s maiden name was Reed because Charles adopted her.”

My head lifted.

“What?”

May you like

Her biological father was someone else.

And Robert knew exactly who.
