Chapter 1 - THE CHARGE DANIEL FORGOT TO HIDE

The first useful mistake Daniel made came less than six hours after Margaret told me to wait.

At 9:17 that morning, our joint credit-card app sent a notification.

$2,800.

LAKESHORE RESIDENCES — APPLICATION HOLD.

I stared at it.

Not a restaurant.

Not a hotel.

An apartment complex.

I took a screenshot before Daniel could move the charge.

Then I searched the property.

Luxury rentals near Lincoln Park.

Two-bedroom units.

Doorman.

Rooftop deck.

Available immediately.

My stomach tightened.

Vanessa needed somewhere to stay.

Daniel’s words from downstairs came back.

Not:

Vanessa needs help finding somewhere.

He had said:

Vanessa needs somewhere to stay.

There was a difference.

Margaret found me twenty minutes later at the kitchen table.

I turned the laptop toward her.

She read the charge.

Her expression barely changed.

“Save the property listing.”

“Already did.”

“Good.”

“You’re disturbingly good at this.”

“I raised Daniel.”

That answer hurt more than she intended.

She noticed.

“I did not say I’m proud of what he became.”

Before I could answer, the garage door opened.

Daniel came in carrying coffee.

He kissed his mother’s cheek.

Then looked at me.

“Can we talk?”

I closed the laptop.

“Sure.”

Margaret stood.

“I’ll give you privacy.”

Daniel visibly relaxed.

Exactly what she wanted.

He sat across from me.

“Yesterday looked bad.”

I waited.

“That’s it?”

“No.”

He rubbed his hands together.

“Vanessa’s going through a brutal divorce fallout.”

“She’s divorced.”

“You know what I mean.”

“No. Explain it.”

He sighed.

Her lease had ended.

Her ex had stopped paying support.

Her son needed stability.

Daniel had been helping.

“How?”

“Occasional money.”

“How much?”

“Not much.”

“Hotel rooms?”

His face changed.

Tiny.

Then:

“Sometimes she needed somewhere private to meet attorneys.”

I almost admired the speed of the lie.

“What about the jewelry store?”

He hesitated.

“Christmas gift.”

“For me?”

A beat too long.

“Yes.”

I smiled.

“Then I can’t wait.”

His shoulders lowered.

He thought he had survived.

Then his phone lit up on the table.

VANESSA.

Message preview:

Did she sign anything yet?

Daniel flipped the phone facedown.

Too late.

I had already seen it.

I kept my expression neutral.

“What am I supposed to sign?”

May you like

He looked at me.

For the first time that morning, the color left his face.
