Chapter 5 - THE NAME I HAD NEVER HEARD

Victor Hale was Clara’s uncle.

And according to Clara, he had spent fifteen years pretending to be the respectable face of the Hale Foundation.

His photograph appeared on university buildings, charity websites, hospital donor walls, and scholarship brochures.

Behind closed doors, Clara said, Victor controlled people through debt.

Arthur Hale had discovered something before his death.

Something involving research grants, offshore accounts, and millions of dollars that had vanished from medical charities.

He began collecting evidence.

Then he died from what everyone called a heart attack.

“My father didn’t trust Victor,” Clara said. “He trusted Julian.”

“So he married you to Julian?”

“On paper.”

Arthur believed that placing certain trust rights under a married couple would make it more difficult for Victor to seize Clara’s inheritance.

The arrangement was supposed to last months.

Instead, everything became complicated after Arthur died.

“What does this have to do with me?”

Clara looked away.

“You found something.”

“What?”

“I don’t know.”

I thought about the week before my crash.

Julian had been unusually tense.

He had repeatedly asked whether I had entered his home office.

Then I remembered.

One night I had been looking for printer paper when I found a bank statement lying beneath a university folder.

There had been enormous transfers.

Millions.

One name appeared repeatedly.

HALE BIOMEDICAL TRUST.

I had photographed the statement because something felt wrong.

My phone backup still contained the image.

Clara stared at me when I showed her.

“That account shouldn’t exist anymore.”

“Why?”

“Because my father closed it twelve years ago.”

I enlarged the statement.

At the bottom was an authorization signature.

Julian Sterling.

My husband hadn’t merely known about Clara’s secret.

He was moving the money.
