Chapter 1 - THE HUSBAND WHO BECAME MY BROTHER

“Who are you?”
The moment those words left my mouth, my husband stopped breathing.
Julian Sterling sat beside my hospital bed, still wearing the gray sweater he had worn when the police called him about my accident. His face was pale, his dark hair disordered, and his wedding ring gleamed beneath the fluorescent lights.
I remembered everything.
The rain.
The intersection.
My brakes failing.
The terrifying second when my car refused to slow down.
And Julian.
Especially Julian.
I had only decided to pretend I had amnesia because I wanted to make him laugh.
Instead, he looked at me for several long seconds and whispered, “I’m your brother.”
I nearly laughed.
“My brother?”
“Your older brother,” he said.
Something about his expression stopped me from ending the joke.
So I kept pretending.
For the next week, Julian played his role perfectly. He brought me breakfast, helped me walk the hallway, spoke carefully around nurses, and never once called me sweetheart.
Then he told me there was someone I needed to meet.
“My wife.”
He took me to the fourth floor.
A fragile blonde woman lay in a private room connected to an IV. She smiled weakly when she saw me.
“I’m Clara,” she said. “Your sister-in-law.”
My stomach dropped.
Julian stood beside her with the familiarity of a man who had done it a hundred times.
Later, he admitted Clara had Stage IV lung cancer. Her late father had funded Julian’s education and paid for his grandmother’s medical treatment.
“I promised her father I would protect her,” Julian said.
That evening, he took me to a condo near the hospital.
Two toothbrushes.
Two pairs of slippers.
Men’s shirts in the closet.
Women’s medication beside the bed.
Then I noticed an envelope on the kitchen counter.
It was addressed to:
May you like
MRS. CLARA STERLING.
And the postmark was six months old.
