Chapter 10 - THE DEAD MAN'S BOX

Clara had one final secret from her father.

A safe-deposit box.

Arthur Hale had rented it under a company name weeks before his death.

Clara possessed one key.

Julian had the authorization code.

And Victor had spent twelve years trying to find it.

We went to the bank together.

Inside the box were no diamonds.

No cash.

No inheritance documents.

Only a black flash drive, an old voice recorder, and thirteen paper files.

Arthur’s recorded voice filled the private viewing room.

“If Clara is hearing this, I failed.”

Clara covered her mouth.

Arthur explained that Victor had been diverting donations intended for oncology research into shell companies controlled by political consultants, vendors, and private investment accounts.

Millions had disappeared.

Arthur discovered the scheme after reviewing foundation records.

He tried to stop it.

Victor threatened to destroy Julian’s scholarship, cancel the payments keeping Julian’s grandmother in assisted care, and cut Clara off financially.

Arthur created the trust as a shield.

Then the recording became stranger.

“I asked Julian to sign documents without telling him their full purpose.”

Julian went pale.

Arthur continued.

“His signature appears on transfers he did not understand.”

I turned toward my husband.

“You signed them?”

Julian said nothing.

The recording continued.

“If Victor ever faces prosecution, he will try to make Julian the fall guy.”

Clara began crying.

Then Arthur revealed the final file.

A ledger documenting every fraudulent transfer.

At least eighteen million dollars.

I turned the page.

My blood went cold.

One transaction had been authorized only seven months earlier.

May you like

Arthur had been dead for twelve years.

And beneath the transfer was Julian’s signature.
