Chapter 7 - THE PART THAT WASN’T BEATRICE’S FAULT

Alex thought about Mateo’s question for three days.
Then he asked Elena to meet.
“I owe you another apology.”
She crossed her arms.
“You have several.”
“I know.”
They sat in a quiet corner of Little Nests after closing.
Alex looked through the glass at a classroom filled with tiny chairs.
“For years I told myself the divorce was finished.”
“It was.”
“No. I mean I treated you like a closed file.”
Elena said nothing.
“I never checked whether you were okay.”
“No.”
“I never asked friends.”
“No.”
“I never looked you up.”
“No.”
“I let my mother tell me you had moved on.”
Elena’s eyes hardened.
“And that was convenient.”
“Yes.”
That answer stopped her.
Alex continued.
“She hid the pregnancy. She hid letters. She lied.”
“Yes.”
“But she didn't stop me from caring what happened to you afterward.”
Elena looked down.
That was the admission she had needed more than outrage at Beatrice.
“You don't get six years back for understanding that.”
“I know.”
“What do you want?”
“To show up now.”
“For how long?”
“For as long as they let me.”
Elena laughed bitterly.
“That's easy to say when everything is new.”
“So make me prove it.”
And she did.
No gifts over $50 without approval.
No surprise visits.
No calling himself Dad unless the children chose it.
No discussing Beatrice with them without Elena present.
No press.
No using Vance family connections around Little Nests.
Alex agreed to everything.
Then Elena gave him the hardest rule.
“If you miss something, don't buy your way out of it.”
He nodded.
For four months, Alex showed up.
Tuesdays.
Saturday breakfasts.
School pickup once a week.
Pediatric appointments when invited.
He learned that Grace hated socks with seams.
Lucas slept with a flashlight under his pillow.
Sofia could identify twelve kinds of birds.
Mateo remembered every promise.
Then Alex missed one.
A deposition in New York ran six hours late.
He missed Mateo’s kindergarten performance.
Alex called beforehand.
Apologized.
Did not send toys.
The next morning, he arrived before school carrying nothing.
Mateo opened the door.
“You missed it.”
“I did.”
“I had a line.”
“I know.”
“I didn't mess up.”
“I heard you were great.”
Mateo stared.
Then asked:
“You still came today?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because missing yesterday doesn't mean I disappear today.”
Mateo considered that.
Then quietly said:
“Okay.”

That same evening, Elena received a legal notice.
Beatrice Vance had filed for grandparent visitation.
