Chapter 10 - WHY ELENA BUILT LITTLE NESTS

Alex assumed Little Nests had begun because Elena loved children.
That was only partly true.
It began because she was terrified.
After the quadruplets came home from the NICU, Elena could not find childcare willing to take four premature infants with different medical needs.
She had savings from the divorce.
Not enough.
She sold jewelry.
Moved apartments.
Worked nights.
Her friend Marisol slept on the couch for six months.
Then one hospital bill arrived for $81,000 after insurance disputes.
Alex stared at the document.
“You paid this?”
“Eventually.”
“How?”
“I didn't.”
He looked up.
“Who did?”
Elena hesitated.
“Your father.”
Alex froze.
“Charles?”
“Yes.”
She had never met him.
One day, an anonymous payment cleared most of the hospital balance.
Years later, when Elena requested archived billing records, she discovered the payment came from a charitable medical assistance account connected to the Vance foundation.
“Did he know the children were mine?”
“I don't know.”
Alex remembered Charles’s note.
Ask Elena directly.
Maybe his father had known more than Beatrice realized.
Maybe he had tried to help without detonating the family before confirming everything.
It was imperfect.
Secretive.
Very Vance.
But it mattered.
Elena continued.
“The hospital experience is why I started Little Nests.”
She partnered with nurses and early-childhood educators to create flexible childcare for medically complex babies.
The first center opened with twelve children.
Then thirty.
Then eighty.
Now there were dozens of locations.
Alex looked around headquarters differently.
This company existed partly because he had not been there.
That truth made praise feel complicated.
“You built something incredible.”
Elena shrugged.
“I built what I needed.”
Then she looked at him.
“And before you say you're sorry again, don't.”
He nodded.
“What should I say?”
“Ask what we need now.”
So he did.
“What do you need now?”
Elena thought.
“Time.”
“You have it.”
“Consistency.”
“Yes.”
“No dramatic gestures.”
He smiled slightly.
“I’ve been told.”
“And the children need privacy.”
“Yes.”
That became important two weeks later.
A celebrity news site published a teaser:
BOSTON BILLIONAIRE LAWYER SECRETLY FATHERED TV ENTREPRENEUR’S QUADRUPLETS.
The article had photographs.
Names.
Birth dates.
And one piece of information only a handful of people possessed.
May you like
Mateo’s kidney surgery.
Someone had leaked confidential records.
