Chapter 11 - THE PERSON WHO SOLD THE STORY

Alex assumed Beatrice had done it.
He was wrong.
That mattered.
The source was traced to a former employee of the investigator Beatrice had hired years earlier.
The employee recognized Elena from television, searched old files, and realized the story had value.
He attempted to sell documents to multiple outlets.
Elena was furious.
Alex was worse.
But this time, he did not charge into confrontation.
He called lawyers.
Protected the children.
Worked with the outlet to stop publication of medical details.
Little Nests issued one statement:
Elena Rivas asks that the privacy of her minor children be respected. No further comment will be provided.
Alex released nothing about paternity beyond confirming he supported that request.
Beatrice surprised everyone.
Reporters surrounded her outside a charity luncheon.
She said only:
“These are children, not family property. Leave them alone.”
Alex watched the clip three times.
Later Beatrice called.
“I know saying the right thing now doesn't erase anything.”
“No.”
“I wanted you to know I didn't leak it.”
“I know.”
“How?”
“My attorney found the source.”
Silence.
Then Beatrice said:
“I am sorry.”
Alex did not forgive her.
But he heard the difference.
No explanation.
No “I was protecting you.”
Just sorry.
Months passed.
The media lost interest.
Real life returned.
Soccer.
Dentist appointments.
Lost shoes.
Birthday invitations.
Alex learned to carry snacks.
He learned that leaving the house with four six-year-olds required the logistical planning of a military operation.
Then one Tuesday, while building a wooden bridge for school, Mateo hit his thumb with a plastic hammer.
He yelled:
“Dad!”
Alex froze.
Mateo froze too.
The room went silent.
Alex forced himself not to make the moment heavier than a six-year-old could carry.
He simply said:
“You okay?”
Mateo nodded.
Then continued building.
Later, Alex sat alone in his car and cried.
Elena saw him from the upstairs window.
The next morning, she sent one text.
He meant it.
Alex replied:
I know.
Then she sent:
May you like
Dinner Friday. Just us.
For the first time since returning to Elena’s life, Alex was more frightened of hope than guilt.
