Chapter 8 - The Shadow Behind the Throne

Nicholas thought he knew every tunnel beneath the Grimaldi estate.

His father had built some of them during the family's darkest years.

But the hidden staircase beneath Isabella's bedroom was unfamiliar.

That afternoon, after checking on Emily at the hospital, Nicholas descended into the passage with Luca and two security officers.

The air smelled of stone and dust.

Fresh footprints stretched along the narrow floor.

Someone had been using the tunnel.

At the end stood a steel door.

The brass key hidden inside the vase fit perfectly.

Nicholas turned it.

Inside was a small underground office.

A wooden desk stood against the wall.

Files filled two metal cabinets.

And dozens of photographs were pinned to a corkboard.

Nicholas stepped closer.

Every photograph showed someone connected to his family.

His father.

His sister.

Margaret Carter.

Richard Caldwell.

And one man Nicholas had trusted since childhood.

His uncle, Victor Grimaldi.

Victor had taken over much of the family's financial operation after Nicholas's father died.

He had helped Nicholas rebuild the organization after years of violence.

He was the closest thing Nicholas had to a second father.

Luca opened one of the files.

“Boss, look at this.”

Inside were records of offshore transfers, illegal property acquisitions, and secret payments made over fifteen years.

Every transaction led to a network of companies controlled by Victor.

Nicholas felt anger rising.

Then he found another folder.

Its label read:

ISABELLA GRIMALDI — STATUS: ALIVE.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph taken three months earlier.

Isabella stood outside a small medical facility, older and thinner, but unmistakably alive.

Nicholas gripped the desk.

His sister.

Alive.

For fifteen years.

Luca stared at the photograph.

“Where was this taken?”

Nicholas turned it over.

A location had been written on the back.

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

Underneath was another message.

Transfer scheduled December 26.

Nicholas reached for his phone.

Then the lights went out.

A mechanical lock slammed shut behind them.

And a voice crackled through a hidden speaker.

May you like

“Hello, Nicholas. Your father should have taught you never to open doors you can't close.”

It was Victor.
