Chapter 12 - The Secret of the Blue Vase

The original vase wasn't in the mansion.

It was inside Richard Caldwell's private storage unit in downtown Chicago.

Luca found the location through payment records recovered from Richard's office.

By dawn on December 26, police investigators were already working with Nicholas's attorney to obtain the necessary evidence.

Richard, facing serious charges related to Emily's treatment and possible involvement in Isabella's disappearance, had begun cooperating.

He gave them the storage unit's location.

Nicholas and Emily waited outside while investigators opened it.

The blue porcelain vase stood inside a wooden crate.

It was beautiful, undamaged, and unmistakably the original.

Nicholas remembered seeing it beside the Christmas tree when he was a boy.

An investigator carefully examined the base.

A concealed compartment was discovered beneath a removable inner panel.

Inside were several documents wrapped in protective material.

Among them was a birth certificate.

Emily Rose Carter.

Mother: Margaret Anne Carter.

Father: Daniel Whitmore.

Emily frowned.

“Daniel Whitmore? My mother told me my father died when I was little.”

Nicholas studied the name.

He remembered Daniel.

A former accountant for the Grimaldi shipping business.

A quiet man who had uncovered Victor's illegal accounts and disappeared soon afterward.

“He worked for my father,” Nicholas said.

Emily stared at him.

“You knew him?”

“Only briefly. I thought he left Chicago years ago.”

The next document was a sworn statement signed by Alessandro Grimaldi.

It explained that Daniel and Margaret had secretly married shortly before Isabella disappeared.

Daniel had been threatened after discovering Victor's financial crimes.

Margaret was already pregnant with Emily.

Alessandro had concealed the marriage and helped Margaret escape with a new identity to keep her unborn child safe.

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“My father wasn't some man who abandoned us.”

Nicholas shook his head.

“No. According to this, he tried to protect you.”

A final envelope contained a photograph of Daniel holding a newborn baby.

On the back, someone had written:

For Emily, when she's old enough to understand why I stayed away.

Beneath it was an address.

A small house near Lake Geneva.

The same town where Isabella had been photographed.

And the accompanying handwritten note contained a shocking revelation.

Daniel Whitmore is still alive.
