Chapter 11 - The Recording That Changed Everything

Nicholas reached the hospital maintenance wing with Luca and two security officers.
Emily was sitting on a folding chair beneath a fluorescent light, wrapped in a borrowed blanket.
The moment she saw Nicholas, she stood.
He crossed the room.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
She nodded.
Nicholas stopped himself from reaching for her, giving her space.
Emily stepped forward instead.
For a brief moment, she leaned against him.
He wrapped his arms around her carefully.
“You scared me,” he whispered.
“I scared myself.”
Later, inside a secure hospital conference room, Emily placed an old digital recorder on the table.
“My mother kept this hidden for years.”
Nicholas pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then his father's voice emerged.
“If this recording reaches Nicholas, it means Victor has finally moved against us.”
Nicholas stopped breathing.
His father, Alessandro Grimaldi, had died ten years earlier.
The voice continued.
“Isabella discovered that Victor was stealing from our legitimate businesses and laundering money through our shipping company.”
Nicholas lowered his eyes.
“Victor threatened her. Margaret helped her escape, but Victor found them before they reached the police.”
Emily's fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
His father paused on the recording.
“I tried to bring Isabella home. Victor threatened to kill both children if I involved the authorities.”
Nicholas looked up sharply.
“Both children?”
The recording continued.
“Margaret was pregnant when she left the estate. Nicholas must never know whose child she was carrying until Victor is stopped.”
Emily went completely still.
“My mother was pregnant with me,” she whispered.
Nicholas stared at the recorder.
The old man's voice grew weak.
“I made mistakes I cannot undo. But I kept one document that proves who Emily Carter really is.”
A drawer opened on the recording.
Paper rustled.
Then Alessandro spoke the final words.
“The truth is hidden in the original blue porcelain vase.”
Nicholas and Emily looked at each other.

The vase Richard had replaced.
And somewhere inside the Grimaldi mansion, the original was still waiting to be found.
