Chapter 14 - THE MAFIA KING'S MOST DANGEROUS PROMISE

Niko Moretti had known Richard Whitmore longer than Ava realized.

Years before Moretti Holdings became one of New York's largest private investment groups, Antonio Moretti had partnered with Richard on several luxury property developments.

But Richard had secretly diverted funds and used Monroe Design House to conceal the losses.

When Eleanor discovered the fraud, she planned to expose everything.

Antonio had intended to help her.

Then Eleanor disappeared.

Niko stood beside the window of his study as he explained the connection.

“My father spent years trying to prove Richard was responsible.”

Ava stared at him.

“Did he know Mom was alive?”

“No. He believed the death certificate was genuine.”

“Then why didn't he tell the police?”

“He did. His allegations were investigated, but the records available at the time weren't enough to establish what happened. Richard used his wealth and influence to keep witnesses silent.”

Ava lowered her eyes.

“So your father spent his life trying to undo what Richard did.”

Niko nodded.

“And before he died, he asked me to finish what he couldn't.”

Ava walked toward him.

“Is that why you helped me?”

“At first.”

She stopped.

Niko turned.

“When I saw Bianca tear your dress, I knew something was wrong. But when you stood there refusing to confess to something you hadn't done, I saw more than a connection to my father's unfinished business.”

Ava's heart beat faster.

“What did you see?”

“A woman who had been treated cruelly and still refused to become cruel herself.”

He stepped closer, leaving her space to move away.

“I've spent much of my life surrounded by people who confuse power with fear. You reminded me power can also mean protecting someone without demanding anything in return.”

Ava looked into his eyes.

“People call you the mafia king.”

“I know.”

“Should I be afraid of you?”

Niko didn't smile.

“You should never have to be afraid of the man standing beside you.”

She searched his face.

“Can you promise that?”

“I can promise honesty. And that you'll always be free to walk away.”

Ava felt tears rise.

For twenty years, love had meant conditions.

Be quiet.

Be grateful.

Don't embarrass the family.

Don't ask questions.

Niko was offering something she'd never had.

A choice.

Slowly, Ava took his hand.

“I don't want to walk away.”

His fingers closed gently around hers.

“Then stay.”

Ava smiled.

Not because she needed rescuing.

But because she finally believed she deserved a love that didn't come with a price.

Three months later, prosecutors announced formal charges against Richard and Victoria.

The investigations continued, and both awaited trial.

Meanwhile, a court approved temporary management arrangements protecting Monroe Design House's assets while the ownership proceedings moved forward.

Ava was appointed creative director under the supervision of an independent board.

Her first decision shocked everyone.

She removed the Whitmore name from the company's flagship collection.

Its new name appeared on a giant screen at a press conference.

THE ELEANOR MONROE COLLECTION.

Eleanor stood beside her daughter as reporters applauded.

Bianca watched quietly from the back of the room.

For once, she did not try to steal the spotlight.

That evening, Niko took Ava to the restored original Monroe studio.

Warm lights illuminated fresh flowers and rows of sketches.

At the center stood a mannequin wearing the repaired emerald gown.

Ava gasped.

“You fixed it?”

Niko shook his head.

“No.”

He gestured toward Eleanor, who emerged smiling from behind a curtain.

“Your mother did.”

Ava walked toward the dress.

Every torn seam had been carefully restored.

But Eleanor had added something new.

A small gold rose embroidered over the place where the key had been hidden.

Ava touched it.

“It's beautiful.”

Eleanor smiled.

“It's yours now. Not because of what it was worth, but because of what it carried you through.”

Niko stepped beside Ava.

“There is one more thing.”

She turned.

He reached into his pocket.

Her breath caught as he opened a small velvet box.

Inside was a simple diamond ring.

No enormous stone.

No public spectacle.

Just a quiet promise.

“Ava Monroe,” he said softly, “I can't give you back the years they stole. But if you'll let me, I'd like to spend the years ahead helping you build the life you choose.”

Ava's eyes filled with tears.

“Niko…”

He smiled gently.

“Will you marry me?”

Before Ava could answer, Eleanor laughed through her tears.

“Oh, sweetheart. Don't leave the poor man standing there forever.”

Ava laughed.

Then looked at Niko.

“Yes.”

He slipped the ring onto her finger.

And when he kissed her, Ava finally understood something her father had never taught her.

Real love didn't make you smaller.

It gave you room to become yourself.

But the greatest surprise was still waiting.

May you like

Because on the morning of her wedding, a letter arrived from the prison where Richard Whitmore was being held.

And inside was a confession Ava never expected to read.
