Chapter 1 - THE KEY THAT MADE THE MAFIA KING GO PALE

The moment Niko Moretti closed his fingers around the tiny gold key, Victoria Whitmore took one step toward the stage.

“Give that to me.”

Her voice was sharp enough to turn every head in the ballroom.

Niko looked at her.

“Why?”

Victoria’s face tightened.

“Because it belongs to my family.”

Ava Monroe stood beneath the chandeliers, clutching Niko’s black coat around her torn emerald dress. Her heart was beating so hard she could barely hear the whispers spreading across the three hundred guests.

“That key belonged to my mother,” she said.

Victoria went still.

Bianca recovered first.

“This is ridiculous. She stole a necklace, destroyed my event, and now she’s inventing some sentimental story.”

Niko ignored her.

He turned the key beneath the light, studying the black rose engraved into its head.

“Eleanor Monroe,” he murmured.

Ava stared at him.

“You knew my mother?”

For the first time since entering the ballroom, Niko looked uncertain.

“I knew someone who spent twenty years trying to find what she left behind.”

Richard Whitmore suddenly stepped forward.

“That’s enough. My daughter is clearly unstable. I’ll handle this privately.”

Niko turned toward him.

“You had twenty years to handle it privately, Richard.”

The entire ballroom fell silent.

Richard stopped walking.

Niko handed the key back to Ava.

“Keep this. Don't let anyone take it from you.”

Then he faced the security director.

“Seal the exits. Nobody leaves until we find out who planted that necklace.”

Bianca laughed nervously.

“You cannot seriously believe her.”

“I don't believe anyone,” Niko replied. “I believe evidence.”

He pointed toward the ceiling.

“Pull every security recording from the last two hours.”

Victoria moved toward the side entrance.

Two guards stepped into her path.

Ava had never seen her stepmother look frightened.

Niko leaned closer to Ava.

“Your mother worked on a private collection before she died. A collection worth far more than anything displayed here.”

Ava frowned.

“She was a seamstress.”

“No,” he said quietly. “That’s what someone wanted you to believe.”

He reached into his pocket and produced an old photograph.

Ava recognized her mother immediately.

Eleanor stood beside a younger Niko and an unfamiliar gray-haired man outside a Manhattan building.

Above the entrance were three words.

MONROE DESIGN HOUSE.

Ava’s knees almost gave way.

Niko steadied her elbow.

“Your mother didn't work for the Whitmores, Ava.”

He looked toward Richard.

“She owned the company that made them rich.”

And across the ballroom, Richard Whitmore quietly reached for his phone.
