Chapter 10 - THE CLINIC BEHIND THE IRON GATES

Rosehaven Medical Center did not appear on any public hospital directory.
The property sat behind tall iron gates, surrounded by dense trees and private security cameras.
By dawn, Niko had confirmed that the clinic had once been operated by a company connected to Victoria Whitmore.
Ava sat beside him in the SUV.
“You think she's there?”
“I think someone wants us to go there.”
“Bianca?”
“Possibly.”
Ava looked through the windshield.
“I have to know.”
Niko nodded.
“We'll do this carefully.”
Rather than force their way inside, Niko contacted a trusted attorney and local law enforcement.
Samuel Bennett supplied old records showing that Rosehaven had received payments from an Eleanor Monroe trust account for nearly twenty years.
That discovery was enough to raise serious questions about the clinic's operations.
Shortly after eight, investigators entered the building with a court-authorized search warrant.
Ava waited outside with Niko.
Every passing minute felt unbearable.
Then a detective approached.
“Mr. Moretti, Miss Monroe. We found a woman registered under an assumed name.”
Ava stood.
“Who?”
The detective looked at her gently.
“Her records identify her as Emily Rose.”
Ava's heart sank.
“That isn't my mother.”
“Her original identification documents suggest otherwise.”
Niko moved closer.
“Can Ava see her?”
The detective nodded.
“She's conscious. Her physician is with her, and she's agreed to a visit.”
Ava walked down a long corridor that smelled of antiseptic and lavender.
At the last room, she stopped.
A woman sat beside a window in a pale blue sweater.
Her hair was silver at the temples.
Her hands rested on a folded blanket.
Ava knew those hands.
She had spent her childhood drawing them from memory.
“Mom?”
The woman looked up.
For a moment, her face remained blank.
Then her eyes widened.
“Ava?”
Ava couldn't move.
The woman rose slowly.
“My little girl?”
Ava crossed the room.
And for the first time in twenty years, Eleanor Monroe held her daughter.
They cried without words.
Niko remained at the doorway, quietly giving them privacy.
After several minutes, Eleanor pulled back.
“Let me look at you.”
Ava laughed through tears.
“I thought you were dead.”
“I tried to come home.”
Her mother's voice trembled.
“I tried so many times.”
Ava wiped her face.
“What happened to you?”
Eleanor looked toward the door.
“Richard and Victoria told the doctors I'd suffered a psychiatric breakdown after the accident. They used my injuries and medication to keep me confused. Every time I asked about you, they said you were safe and that seeing you would make me worse.”
Ava felt anger rise.
“You were trapped here?”
Eleanor nodded.
“Some staff suspected the truth. Others were paid to look away. Eventually I learned to pretend I remembered nothing.”
“Why?”
“Because I was trying to survive long enough to get back to you.”
Ava held her hands.
“I'm here now.”
Eleanor smiled through tears.
Then she looked toward Niko.
“You're Antonio's son.”
“Yes, ma'am.”
“He told me once that you were stubborn.”
Niko almost smiled.
“He wasn't wrong.”
Eleanor squeezed Ava's hands.
“There is something you need to know.”
“What?”
“Your father never owned my company.”
Ava nodded.
“We found the forged transfer.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“No, sweetheart. You don't understand.”
She leaned closer.
“The original trust was designed to activate on your thirtieth birthday—or the moment the fraud was legally established.”
Ava stared at her.
May you like
Eleanor whispered.
“You already own everything Richard has been pretending belongs to him.”
