Chapter 14 - THE LAST FALSE LEDGER

Rachel felt the entire room tilt.
Mercer had been shot.
She had seen the blood.
The paramedics.
The ambulance.
But now he stood beside Stephen Cole without so much as a limp.
Rachel whispered, “You staged it.”
Mercer smiled sadly.
“Not everything.”
“The sniper?”
“Blank through the window. Blood pack under my shirt.”
Nicholas’s expression turned murderous.
“You built Northstar.”
Mercer adjusted his jacket.
“With Stephen. Vincent. Roberto. Several others.”
Rachel stared at the man who had hired her.
Mentored her.
Praised her.
Remembered her birthdays.
“My father trusted you.”
“Yes.”
“And you killed him.”
Mercer’s smile vanished.
“He discovered Northstar too early.”
Rachel’s eyes burned.
“You spent seventeen years pretending to protect me.”
“I was protecting myself.”
Mercer looked almost offended.
“Do you know why I hired you? Because if Thomas hid evidence anywhere, I knew eventually you would find it.”
Rachel finally understood.
Every promotion.
Every special assignment.
Every file placed on her desk.
Mercer had been using her as a search engine for her dead father’s secrets.
Stephen stepped forward.
“Give us the real ledger.”
Nicholas smiled faintly.
“You mean the one Evan gave Antonio?”
Mercer’s face tightened.
That was the first mistake.
Rachel saw it.
He didn’t know.
Antonio had betrayed them too.
A siren sounded in the distance.
Stephen looked toward the window.
Mercer remained calm.
“The FBI?”
He smiled.
“Half their case is built on judges I control.”
Rachel reached into her pocket.
“No.”
She removed a small flash drive.
“The case is built on you.”
Mercer’s smile disappeared.
Rachel had spent the previous six hours reconstructing Northstar.
Not just accounts.
Connections.
Signatures.
Metadata.
Old timestamps.
Payment authorizations.
She had discovered Mercer’s mistake.
Every Northstar ledger had been falsified after Thomas’s death.
Except one.
The earliest prototype.
It carried Mercer’s original digital certificate.
Rachel uploaded it to three federal agencies, two newspapers, and an independent prosecutor ten minutes before entering the ballroom.
Mercer lunged.
Gunfire exploded.
Daniel’s team crashed through both entrances.
Stephen’s men dropped their weapons.
Evan ran.
Again.
But this time Rachel saw where he went.
The kitchen exit.
The same style of rear door.
The same kind of deadbolt.
Rachel followed.
Outside, snow had begun falling.
Evan reached the alley.
Rachel stopped in the doorway.
He turned.
“Rachel, please.”
That word.
Please.
She remembered herself barefoot on the landing.
She looked at him for a long moment.
Then she stepped aside as police officers came around the corner.
“No.”
Evan was handcuffed.
Stephen was arrested.
Mercer was taken alive.
Northstar was finished.
Or so Rachel believed.
Then Nicholas received a text.
One photograph.
Antonio Valenti standing at the Lake Geneva cabin.

THERE IS ONE TRUTH LEFT TO TELL.
