Chapter 11 - THE DEAD MAN'S VOICE

For fourteen years, Nicholas had visited an empty grave.
That knowledge changed him.
Rachel saw it immediately.
He became quieter.
Colder.
More focused.
Vincent was transported under armed guard to a private medical facility.
Diane was safe.
Evan remained missing.
And Nicholas began searching for a dead man.
Rachel stayed beside him.
Not because she trusted his world.
Because somewhere between the snowstorm and the ruined courthouse, she had begun trusting him.
They returned to the Lake Geneva tapes.
One cassette remained unlabeled.
Nicholas inserted it.
At first, only static.
Then Antonio’s voice.
“Nicholas, if you hear this, I made the decision I prayed I would never have to make.”
Nicholas stopped breathing.
“I cannot remain visible without putting you in danger. Vincent and Roberto have corrupted too many people. If they believe I am dead, they will expose themselves.”
Nicholas closed his eyes.
Rachel touched his hand.
Antonio continued.
“Thomas Bennett discovered something bigger than stolen money. Northstar was designed to control Chicago through debt, favors, and fear.”
Then came a date.
April 12, 2012.
Three days after Antonio’s supposed death.
“I am leaving. But I will watch.”
Nicholas’s hand tightened around Rachel’s.
The recording continued.
“One day, Thomas’s daughter may find what we could not finish. If that happens, protect her.”
Rachel looked at Nicholas.
The cassette clicked.
Then one final sentence played.
“And Nicholas, if Vincent ever tells you Roberto killed Thomas, he is lying.”
Nicholas stood.
Rachel stared at the recorder.
“Then who did?”
Daniel entered carrying fresh surveillance stills.
“We found Evan.”
Rachel looked up.
“Where?”
“O’Hare.”
“Leaving?”
“No.”
Daniel placed the picture down.
Evan was entering a private terminal.
Beside him stood a gray-haired man.
Nicholas stared at the face.
He had not seen it since childhood.
Rachel whispered, “Who is that?”
Nicholas’s voice cracked for the first time.
“My father.”
Antonio Valenti was alive.
May you like
But that was not the worst part.
The next security image showed Evan handing Antonio the missing original ledger.
