Chapter 13 - THE ENGAGEMENT WAS A JOB

Rachel remembered their first date.

A wine bar in River North.

Evan spilling water because he was nervous.

The way he had said, “I feel like I already know you.”

Now she understood why.

He did.

He had studied her.

Her job.

Her friends.

Her mother.

Her grief.

Her insecurities.

Maybe even the yellow dress Nicholas had seen in the background report.

None of it had been accidental.

Rachel sat in silence while Daniel traced Judge Stephen Cole’s network.

Twenty-three shell companies.

Six judges.

Two police commanders.

One state contractor.

And dozens of payments hidden beneath civic-development projects.

The entire Northstar system led back to Cole.

Nicholas watched Rachel.

“You don’t have to finish this.”

She looked at him.

“Yes, I do.”

“For your father?”

“For me.”

That answer changed something between them.

By evening, Rachel designed a trap.

Not with guns.

With numbers.

She created a fake encrypted archive suggesting Thomas Bennett had stored complete Northstar evidence in a Meridian cloud server.

Then she sent a single message from her compromised old email account.

EVAN, I FOUND EVERYTHING.

Twenty-three minutes later, Evan replied.

WHERE ARE YOU?

Rachel smiled without humor.

“Still predictable.”

She arranged a meeting inside the ballroom of the wedding venue Evan had chosen.

Six weeks early.

The room was empty except for covered tables and unfinished floral displays.

Rachel stood alone in the center.

At least, she appeared alone.

Nicholas and Daniel watched from behind service walls.

Evan entered.

He looked exhausted.

“Rachel.”

She felt nothing.

That surprised her.

“You tried to kill me.”

“I was angry.”

“You locked me outside at nine below zero.”

“I didn’t know Vincent wanted you dead.”

“You knew enough.”

Evan stepped closer.

“My father forced me into this.”

“Did he force you to monitor my weight?”

Evan looked away.

“Did he force you to humiliate me?”

Silence.

“Did he force you to make me afraid of eating garlic bread?”

His jaw tightened.

“You always make everything dramatic.”

Rachel smiled.

There he was.

The real Evan.

Not a spy.

Not a victim.

Just a cruel man who had finally run out of excuses.

“Where is your father?”

Evan laughed.

“You think Nicholas Valenti can protect you?”

Rachel held up her phone.

“No.”

She tapped the screen.

“But the FBI can hear you.”

Evan’s face changed.

He lunged.

Nicholas stepped from behind the wall.

Evan stopped instantly.

Then applause echoed from the ballroom entrance.

Slow.

Measured.

Judge Stephen Cole entered with three armed men.

“Very clever, Rachel.”

He looked at Nicholas.

“But you misunderstood something.”

Nicholas moved in front of her.

Stephen smiled.

“Vincent was never the head of Northstar.”

Rachel said, “You were.”

Stephen shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward the side door.

An elderly man stepped into the ballroom.

Rachel recognized him from the old photograph.

Charles Mercer.

Alive.

Walking.

Smiling.

May you like

Stephen revealed the truth.

“Charles was.”
