Chapter 4 - BIANCA'S REAL PLAN

Raphael found the van abandoned near the waterfront.

Noel was not inside.

But Bianca’s veil was.

Clara stared at the white lace lying on the dirty floor.

“She planned this before the ceremony.”

Raphael agreed.

The interrupted wedding had not caused Noel’s kidnapping.

It had accelerated it.

Milo found tire marks leading toward an old ferry warehouse.

Inside, Raphael’s men discovered computers, forged shipping documents, and photographs.

Hundreds of photographs.

Raphael.

His docks.

His employees.

Clara.

Noel.

Some were months old.

Clara picked up one taken outside her apartment.

Noel was asleep against her shoulder.

On the back someone had written:

THE GIRL MAKES THE MOTHER COOPERATIVE.

Raphael’s face became unreadable.

“Bianca was using you.”

“For what?”

Before he could answer, Milo called from the next room.

They found financial documents.

Bianca and Anthony had spent two years positioning shell companies around Raphael’s legitimate shipping businesses.

The marriage contract would have connected Bianca legally to several trusts.

Not enough to control Raphael.

Enough to access information.

Clara stared at the documents.

“Why marry you just to get paperwork?”

“Because somebody wants the harbor.”

Then Raphael found a name.

Victor Salvi.

His father’s oldest enemy.

A man presumed retired after suffering a stroke.

Except bank transfers suggested Victor had been funding Bianca.

Raphael remembered his father once saying Victor never attacked a locked door.

He convinced somebody inside to open it.

Bianca had been that person.

But Clara was confused.

“What does any of this have to do with me?”

Raphael looked at Anthony’s old payments.

One recurring recipient appeared under an alias.

C.W.

Clara Whitfield.

Payments started eight years earlier.

Clara shook her head.

“I never received these.”

“Someone received them using your name.”

The account had millions.

Then Raphael saw the authorized beneficiary.

Noel Whitfield.

He looked at Clara.

“How old is Noel?”

“Four.”

“When is her birthday?”

She told him.

Raphael calculated.

Then slowly sat down.

The account had been created before Noel was born.

Before Clara knew she was pregnant.

Someone had known a child was coming.

Clara’s face went white.

“That’s impossible.”

Raphael looked at the earliest document.

At the bottom was a handwritten note from Anthony Morelli:

IF THE CHILD IS BORN, SHE MUST NEVER KNOW WHO HER FATHER REALLY WAS.

Raphael looked at Clara.

May you like

She stared back.

And for the first time, he understood why the Morellis had never stopped watching her.
