Chapter 1 - THE VOICE ON THE OLD PHONE

Two hundred and thirty people watched Clara Whitfield stand in the center aisle of St. Leonard’s Church with both hands wrapped around an old flip phone.
Raphael Duca did not move.
His bride, Bianca Morelli, did.
“What is this?” Bianca demanded.
Clara looked toward Raphael.
Her face had gone almost gray.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Duca.”
“For what?”
“For waiting this long.”
She opened the phone.
A recording began.
At first, there was only static.
Then came a man’s voice.
“Once Duca signs the marriage agreement, you’ll have access to the harbor accounts.”
Raphael’s expression changed.
The voice continued.
A woman laughed softly.
Bianca stopped breathing.
Everyone in the church recognized her voice.
“And Clara?”
the man asked.
“She won’t matter after the wedding.”
Raphael slowly turned toward the woman who had been seconds away from becoming his wife.
Bianca’s lips parted.
“That isn’t me.”
Clara pressed another button.
The recording continued.
Bianca’s voice became clearer.
“The maid heard something she shouldn’t have. If she talks, remind her what happened when she was nineteen.”
Clara flinched.
Raphael noticed.
He had seen criminals threaten men twice their size without making him feel what he felt now.
This was different.
This was personal.
“Who is the man?” Raphael asked.
Clara shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Bianca stepped down from the altar.
“She stole that phone. She’s lying.”
“I didn’t steal it.”
“Then where did you get it?”
Clara looked toward the front pew.
An elderly man sat beside Bianca’s mother.
His face had gone completely white.
Clara pointed at him.
“He dropped it in Mr. Duca’s library three months ago.”
The man stood.
Raphael knew him.
Anthony Morelli.
Bianca’s uncle.
A respected businessman.
A man who had worked with Raphael’s father.
Anthony moved toward the side exit.
Raphael raised one finger.
Milo shut the door.
Nobody left.
Raphael looked back at Clara.
“What happened when you were nineteen?”
Clara’s eyes filled with fear.
“Not here.”
“Clara.”
She pressed one hand to her chest.
Her breathing had become shallow.
Raphael immediately lowered his voice.
“All right.”
But Bianca suddenly shouted:
“She’s obsessed with you!”
The church erupted in whispers.
Clara looked humiliated.
Raphael said nothing.
Bianca pointed at her.
“She brings her daughter into your house. She hides upstairs. She listens behind doors. Ask her why!”
Raphael’s eyes narrowed.
Then Noel’s name appeared on the phone screen.
Not in Clara’s contacts.
Inside a text message sent six weeks earlier.
NOEL WHITFIELD — AGE 4.
Beneath it was an address.
Clara’s address.
