Chapter 13 - THE PROMISE BESIDE HER BED

The doctors used words Raphael hated because money could not intimidate them.

Arrhythmia.

Cardiomyopathy.

Progressive failure.

Urgent intervention.

He stood outside Clara’s hospital room while Noel slept against Daniel’s shoulder.

“She knew,” Raphael said.

Daniel nodded.

“She told me years ago she had heart problems.”

“And you left.”

“I was threatened into disappearing.”

Raphael looked at him.

Daniel met his gaze.

“I’m not asking forgiveness.”

Hours later, the surgeon came out.

Clara needed a procedure immediately.

Without it, another collapse could kill her.

Raphael signed everything.

Cost did not matter.

Clara woke before surgery.

When she saw him, she frowned.

“Noel?”

“Safe.”

“Daniel?”

“With her.”

“Bianca?”

“Being questioned.”

She relaxed slightly.

Then noticed the paperwork.

“You paid.”

“Yes.”

“I can’t repay you.”

“I don’t remember asking.”

“Raphael.”

He sat beside her.

“Clara, you walked into a church full of people terrified of me and stopped my wedding.”

Her mouth twitched.

“That was stupid.”

“It was.”

“I thought you might fire me.”

“I considered it.”

She laughed weakly.

Then his expression softened.

“You saved my life.”

“I embarrassed you in front of two hundred thirty people.”

“That too.”

She looked at him.

“Why are you doing all this?”

He had answers involving debt.

Duty.

Protection.

None were true enough.

“Because when you collapsed, I was afraid.”

“Of losing evidence?”

“No.”

Silence.

Raphael reached into his pocket.

One of Noel’s pebbles.

He had found it in the sewing room.

“I spent most of my life believing fear was useful.”

Clara watched him.

“I was wrong.”

Before she could answer, the nurse entered.

They had to take her.

Raphael stepped back.

Clara caught his hand.

“Raphael.”

It was the first time she used his name without Mr. Duca.

He looked at her.

“If I don’t wake up—”

“No.”

“Listen.”

“No.”

“Take care of Noel.”

He leaned closer.

“You tell her yourself.”

“Promise.”

His jaw tightened.

“I promise.”

She released his hand.

The doors closed.

Raphael stood there for five hours.

Then the surgeon came out.

The procedure had worked.

Raphael closed his eyes.

But there was another surprise.

During Clara’s cardiac imaging, doctors discovered her condition was not random.

It was inherited.

And genetic testing linked it to Victor Salvi.

That meant medical records could finally prove something Victor had denied for twenty-seven years:

Clara was unquestionably his daughter.

And Victor Salvi had just requested permission to see her.
