Chapter 7 - The Baby Margaret Wanted Gone

Abigail hadn't slept properly in three nights.

Every time she closed her eyes, she heard Richard Sinclair's warning.

From what she did to the last woman who carried my child.

She wanted to believe he was exaggerating.

But her mother had spent years hiding letters, photographs, and evidence.

And someone had broken into her apartment immediately after the gala.

That morning, Abigail received a message from her obstetrician's office.

Her next appointment had been canceled.

She called immediately.

The receptionist sounded confused.

"Ms. Foster, someone claiming to be your family representative requested the change."

Abigail gripped her phone.

"I didn't authorize that."

"I'm so sorry. We'll restore your appointment and add a security note to your account."

Abigail contacted Rachel Bennett, an attorney Matteo had recommended.

Rachel specialized in family disputes, workplace retaliation, and protecting vulnerable clients.

Within an hour, Rachel helped Abigail file complaints about the unauthorized appointment change and the threatening calls.

She also contacted the police detective handling the break-in.

"This is escalating," Rachel said. "We need to document everything."

Abigail looked toward the window.

"I just want my baby to be safe."

Rachel's expression softened.

"Then that's our priority."

Later that afternoon, Isabella arrived carrying a small knitted blanket.

"I made this," she said shyly.

Abigail unfolded it.

Tiny blue stars decorated the soft white fabric.

"It's beautiful."

Isabella smiled.

"I didn't know whether you were having a boy or girl."

"A boy."

"Then he can still have stars."

They laughed.

For a moment, Abigail forgot everything else.

Then Isabella became serious.

"Can I tell you something?"

"Of course."

"Matteo hasn't been himself since the gala."

Abigail looked up.

"Why?"

"Because he thinks our family's tragedy and yours are connected."

Isabella explained that their father, Lorenzo Romano, had been investigating the Sinclair family's hidden financial operations before his murder.

Margaret Sinclair had been one of his last known contacts.

"And Matteo believes the same people who killed our father may have caused my accident."

Abigail stared.

"Your accident wasn't an accident?"

"We don't know."

Isabella pulled out her phone.

"Matteo found this in Dad's old records."

The screen displayed a photograph of a damaged black sedan.

Abigail felt a strange tightening in her chest.

The vehicle looked familiar.

Then Isabella enlarged the image.

The license plate was partially visible.

Abigail covered her mouth.

"I've seen that car."

"Where?"

"Outside my mother's hospital room the night she died."

Isabella went pale.

Then Abigail remembered something else.

The man standing beside the car.

Tall.

Dark-haired.

With a silver ring on his right hand.

May you like

The same ring worn by Daniel Pierce.

The father of Abigail's unborn baby.
