Chapter 5 - The Dead Wife Who Was Watching

Margaret Sinclair had been declared dead after a private plane crash ten years earlier.
Her funeral had been attended by senators, billionaires, and some of the most powerful families in America.
Abigail remembered seeing photographs in the newspapers.
Now her mother's letter claimed Margaret had survived.
And that she had threatened Evelyn Foster for years.
Matteo read the letter twice.
"Your mother believed Margaret was alive?"
"She wrote it six years ago."
"Do you recognize this address?"
Abigail looked at the final page.
A property in Lake Forest, north of Chicago.
"No."
Gabriel immediately began checking public property records.
Within an hour, they discovered the estate belonged to a holding company connected to Sinclair Global.
Its owner was listed as a private trust.
Its beneficiary was unidentified.
Matteo's expression darkened.
"That's not proof Margaret is alive, but it's worth investigating."
Abigail sat on the edge of the hotel bed.
"Why would my mother hide this from me?"
Matteo looked at her.
"Maybe she was trying to keep you safe."
Abigail's eyes filled.
"She spent her entire life working double shifts. She died believing she hadn't given me enough."
Matteo sat in the chair opposite her.
"What did she give you?"
Abigail smiled sadly.
"Everything she had."
"Then she gave you more than enough."
For a moment, the room felt less frightening.
Then Abigail's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered cautiously.
"Hello?"
A woman's voice spoke.
"You should have stayed invisible, Abigail."
Abigail went cold.
"Who is this?"
"You've already caused enough trouble for the Sinclair family."
Matteo noticed her expression.
Abigail activated the speaker.
The woman continued.
"Tell Romano to stop digging into things that don't concern him."
Matteo leaned forward.
"Who is this?"
A soft laugh.
"Still playing the hero, Matteo?"
His face changed.
He knew that voice.
"Margaret?"
Silence.
Then the woman spoke again.
"Your father should've taught you what happens to men who interfere with my family."
The call ended.
Matteo stared at the phone.
Abigail looked at him.
"You know her?"
He nodded slowly.
"Margaret Sinclair was my father's business partner before she disappeared."
May you like
He paused.
"And three weeks before her plane supposedly crashed, my father was murdered."
