Chapter 14 - The Heiress Who Lost Her Crown

Vanessa Sinclair had believed her money could erase anything.

A bad headline.

An embarrassing photograph.

A waitress she had humiliated in front of two hundred guests.

But money couldn't erase the records investigators had recovered.

Nor could it undo the attack that killed Evelyn Foster.

When federal agents and local detectives arrived at the Sinclair mansion, Vanessa was sitting in her dressing room, surrounded by designer clothes.

"Miss Sinclair," one investigator said, "we need you to come with us."

She laughed.

"Do you have any idea who my father is?"

The investigator showed her the warrant.

"Yes, ma'am."

Vanessa stood.

"This is ridiculous."

She reached for her phone.

"Call Daddy."

"Your father is already cooperating with the investigation."

Her expression changed.

"What?"

"And your mother is being sought in connection with several serious offenses."

Vanessa backed toward her vanity.

"No."

The investigator remained calm.

"You're being arrested in connection with the conspiracy surrounding Evelyn Foster's death."

Vanessa's face drained of color.

"That woman died years ago!"

The investigator said nothing.

Then Vanessa made the mistake of continuing.

"I didn't know they were going to hurt her that badly!"

The room went silent.

Her attorney, who had just entered, immediately told her to stop speaking.

But the words were already out.

Across the city, Matteo received news of the arrest while sitting outside Abigail's hospital room.

He closed his eyes.

Eight years.

Eight years of unanswered questions about his father.

Eight years of guilt over Isabella's accident.

And now the people connected to both tragedies were finally being held accountable.

He entered Abigail's room.

She was awake, resting against her pillows.

"Did they find Vanessa?"

He nodded.

"She's in custody."

Abigail looked toward the window.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then tears ran down her face.

"Mom never got to see this."

Matteo sat beside her.

"No. But what she saved helped make it possible."

Abigail nodded slowly.

Her mother's courage had outlived her.

The investigation continued for months.

Margaret was arrested after attempting to flee through a private airport.

Richard provided testimony and faced legal consequences for his own concealment of evidence.

Daniel Pierce also cooperated with investigators, admitting his role in monitoring Abigail and seeking a lawful arrangement to address his responsibilities as a father.

Abigail made one thing clear.

He wouldn't simply return to her life because they shared a child.

Any future involvement would have to be safe, consistent, and centered on their son's well-being.

Matteo respected that decision.

As Abigail approached the thirty-fifth week of pregnancy, her doctors allowed her to return to a carefully monitored routine.

One evening, she stood on the balcony of the apartment Matteo had helped her find.

The city lights glittered below.

Matteo stood beside her, holding two cups of decaffeinated tea.

"Abigail?"

She turned.

"Yes?"

"I've been meaning to ask you something."

She smiled.

"That sounds serious."

"It is."

He looked nervous.

Matteo Romano, the man who could negotiate billion-dollar deals without blinking, suddenly seemed unable to find the right words.

"I know you've been through more than anyone should."

Abigail waited.

"And I know the last thing you need is another man trying to decide your future."

Her expression softened.

"But I would like to be part of it."

Abigail stared at him.

"What are you saying?"

Matteo took a breath.

"I'm falling in love with you."

Her eyes widened.

He continued.

"I don't expect an answer tonight. I don't expect anything you aren't ready to give."

Abigail stepped closer.

"And what if I told you I've been falling in love with you too?"

Matteo went completely still.

Then he smiled.

The most beautiful, unguarded smile Abigail had ever seen.

He reached for her hand.

She gave it to him.

But before either could speak again, Abigail felt a sudden movement.

Then warmth spread down her legs.

She looked at Matteo.

Her eyes widened.

"Matteo."

"What?"

May you like

"My water just broke."

And this time, the baby wasn't going to wait.
