Chapter 9 - THE MEETING I REFUSED TO BE AFRAID OF

I did not meet Salvatore alone.
He demanded it.
I refused.
He threatened to leave.
I told him to enjoy the drive.
Eventually, he accepted Rebecca, federal agents in the next room, and Vanessa’s father present.
Power hates witnesses.
That was the first thing I learned after leaving Adrian.
Salvatore sat across from me inside the Russo family library.
He looked disappointingly ordinary.
Sixty-three.
Silver hair.
Perfect suit.
Gentle voice.
Monster stories always prepare you for horns.
Real dangerous men often wear cuff links.
“You’re calmer than expected,” he said.
“I’ve had a stressful month.”
He smiled.
“Adrian likes that about you.”
“Did you bring me here to discuss my marriage?”
“I brought you here to save your child.”
My hand moved instinctively to my stomach.
Adrian, watching from the far side of the room, went completely still.
Salvatore slid a document across the table.
He offered to surrender.
Turn over financial records.
Cooperate.
In exchange, I would sign away the child’s future Moretti trust rights.
I almost laughed.
“That’s it?”
“Those rights are a curse.”
“For once, we agree.”
Salvatore seemed surprised.
I pushed the document back.
“Then dissolve the trust.”
His smile vanished.
“It cannot be dissolved easily.”
“Not my problem.”
“You don’t understand.”
“No.”
I leaned forward.
“You don’t understand. I don’t care whether my child inherits a building, a trust, a title, or a single Moretti dollar.”
Adrian looked at me.
I continued.
“I care whether my child grows up believing love requires secrecy, fear, and control.”
Salvatore’s face hardened.
“You think you can raise Adrian Moretti’s child outside this family?”
“I think families are people, not balance sheets.”
He glanced at Adrian.
“This is what she did to you.”
Adrian’s voice came quietly.
“No.”
Salvatore turned.
Adrian continued.
“This is what I should have learned before I met her.”
Something changed in the room.
Salvatore had expected Adrian to defend the empire.
Instead, Adrian said:
“I’m giving up my remaining trust rights.”
Salvatore stood.
“You can’t.”
“Watch me.”
“You would destroy generations of Moretti power.”
Adrian almost smiled.
“That is becoming the point.”
Salvatore finally lost his calm.
“You weak, ungrateful—”
Vanessa’s father stepped forward.
Federal agents entered.
Salvatore realized the meeting had never been negotiation.
It had been documentation.
He had already admitted knowledge of forged trust instruments.
Rebecca had recorded everything legally under the conditions of the meeting.
Salvatore looked at me with real hatred.
“You think you won?”
“No.”
I stood carefully.
“I think I’m tired.”
That answer infuriated him more.
As agents moved in, Salvatore shouted toward Adrian:
“She’ll still leave you!”
Adrian didn’t answer.
I did.
“Maybe.”
The room went silent.
I looked at Adrian.
“Because whether I stay is not his reward for doing the right thing.”
Adrian’s eyes held mine.
Then he nodded.
“Exactly.”
That was the first time I knew he truly understood.
Salvatore was taken into custody.
It should have felt like an ending.
It wasn’t.
Three days later, Adrian testified before a federal grand jury.
He turned over everything.
Legal operations.
Illegal ones.
Names.
Accounts.
His own decisions.
Then Rebecca called me.
“Claire, Adrian’s cooperation agreement came through.”
My stomach tightened.
“How bad?”
“He may avoid prison.”
I exhaled.
“But?”
“There is a condition.”
“What?”
“He has to surrender control of Moretti Capital.”
That sounded like progress.
Then she added:
“And he already signed.”
I sat quietly.
The company.
The title.
The empire.
He had finally chosen to let them go.
But Rebecca wasn’t finished.
“He signed one more document.”
“What?”
“The divorce settlement.”
My heart stopped.
“Without negotiating?”
“Without changing a word.”
I closed my eyes.
May you like
The marriage I once begged him to acknowledge was almost over.
And for the first time, Adrian was giving me the freedom to decide whether that was what I truly wanted.
