Chapter 1 - THE ULTRASOUND HE NEVER EXPECTED

Adrian Moretti had faced federal raids, hostile takeovers, betrayals, and men who wanted him dead.

None of them prepared him for a grainy black-and-white ultrasound photograph.

Luca Ferraro, his security chief, later told me Adrian stood beside our bed for nearly five minutes without moving.

My half of the closet was empty.

My toothbrush was gone.

The little ceramic mug I used every morning was gone.

Everything that made the apartment feel like I belonged there had disappeared.

On the kitchen island sat the divorce papers.

My wedding ring.

And the ultrasound.

Eight weeks.

One heartbeat.

Our child.

Adrian apparently read my note six times.

You don’t have to hide your wife anymore.

Then he called Luca.

“Find Claire.”

Luca asked the question anyone in Adrian’s world would ask.

“Do you want her brought back?”

Adrian went silent.

Then:

“No.”

Luca later told me that answer surprised him.

“Find her,” Adrian said. “Make sure she’s safe. Nobody touches her. Nobody pressures her. And if she tells you to leave, you leave.”

By then, I was already three hours away.

I had taken a train north under my maiden name and checked into a small hotel outside Boston.

Only two people knew where I was.

My divorce attorney, Rebecca Sloan.

And my college roommate, Maya Collins.

I turned off the phone Adrian had paid for and bought a cheap prepaid one.

For the first time in three years, no Moretti security system knew where I slept.

I should have felt free.

Instead, I spent that first night sitting on the hotel bathroom floor with one hand over my stomach, crying into a towel so no one in the neighboring room would hear.

I had loved Adrian.

That was the part anger couldn’t erase.

I loved the way he made espresso before I woke up.

The way he always touched the back of my neck when he passed behind my chair.

The way he remembered that thunderstorms kept me awake.

The way he talked to me differently when nobody else was around.

That had been our problem.

Everything beautiful only existed when nobody else could see it.

At 2:13 a.m., my prepaid phone rang.

Unknown number.

I didn’t answer.

It rang again.

Then a text appeared.

Claire, this is Luca. Adrian does not know where you are. I am not asking you to tell me.

I stared at the screen.

A second message followed.

But someone else is looking for you.

My body went cold.

I typed:

Who?

Luca responded immediately.

We intercepted a request sent to three private investigators tonight. They were given your photograph, your maiden name, and instructions to locate any recent medical appointments.

I stopped breathing.

Only a handful of people knew I was pregnant.

Adrian.

Rebecca.

My doctor.

Me.

Unless someone had seen the ultrasound.

I typed:

Did Adrian send it?

No.

Then who?

The typing indicator appeared.

Disappeared.

Returned.

Finally:

That’s what scares me.

I stood and crossed to the hotel window.

The parking lot below was nearly empty.

Then headlights switched on inside a dark SUV across the street.

The vehicle had been sitting there when I arrived.

I had assumed it belonged to another guest.

Now it slowly pulled away from the curb.

My phone buzzed again.

Luca:

Claire, Adrian’s apartment was entered after he left this morning.

Nothing valuable was taken.

Except one thing.

I already knew.

Still, I typed:

What?

May you like

His response made my stomach turn.

The ultrasound photo was copied.
