Chapter 5 - THE FILE WITH MY NAME ON IT

We returned to New York under security I did not want and apparently needed.

I refused Adrian’s penthouse.

That boundary remained.

Instead, Rebecca arranged a furnished apartment owned by her firm’s corporate housing partner.

No Moretti ownership.

No hidden access.

No Adrian keys.

He accepted that without argument.

Again, small.

Again, important.

Luca survived.

Concussion.

Broken ribs.

No permanent damage.

When he woke, he gave us one name.

Marco Bellini.

Deputy security director.

Adrian had trusted him for six years.

Marco vanished before anyone could question him.

His office did not.

Inside, investigators found a locked drawer.

Inside that drawer was a file.

My file.

Photographs of me going to work.

Leaving grocery stores.

Meeting Rebecca.

Entering my doctor’s office.

A copy of my marriage certificate.

A copy of my passport.

And one horrifying sheet titled:

POTENTIAL PRESSURE POINTS.

My parents were dead.

No siblings.

Few close relatives.

Career.

Financial independence.

Pregnancy.

At the bottom:

PRIMARY WEAKNESS: EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT TO ADRIAN MORETTI.

I stared at that line longer than the others.

They had built a strategy around my love.

Of course they had.

Adrian stood across the room.

His face became something I had never seen.

Not rage.

Disgust.

At himself.

“This existed in my building.”

“Yes.”

“Under my security.”

“Yes.”

“I told you secrecy protected you.”

I closed the file.

“It protected everyone who wanted me isolated.”

He looked away.

That was the first moment I think Adrian truly understood what secrecy had done.

Nobody had to challenge me publicly.

Nobody had to negotiate with me.

Nobody had to recognize my legal position.

Because Adrian had trained the entire world to treat me as someone unofficial.

Disposable.

We found financial records too.

Marco had received payments through companies tied to Salvatore.

Then another name appeared.

Dr. Steven Lowe.

My obstetrician.

My blood went cold.

“No.”

Rebecca frowned.

“What?”

“That’s my doctor.”

Adrian reached for the page.

Three payments.

Not enormous.

But recent.

I called the clinic immediately.

Dr. Lowe was “unavailable.”

I asked whether anyone had accessed my records.

The receptionist became evasive.

Rebecca took over.

Within two hours, the clinic’s legal department admitted an unauthorized employee had viewed my file.

Dr. Lowe was not involved.

His assistant was.

She had been bribed.

Salvatore had obtained my pregnancy information weeks before I left Adrian.

He knew before Adrian did.

That realization sickened me.

The enemy knew about our child while my husband didn’t.

Because I had been too hurt to tell him.

And Adrian had been too busy hiding me to notice how far away I had already gone.

That night, he came to my apartment door.

He did not enter.

“I need to tell you something.”

“What?”

“I announced our marriage.”

My heart stopped.

“When?”

I stared.

He handed me his phone.

A statement had been released publicly.

Three years ago, I married Claire Bennett. I kept our marriage private. That decision was mine, and the harm it caused her was mine. Any suggestion that she was involved in criminal activity connected to my family is false.

I read it twice.

Then:

My wife has filed for divorce. I will respect whatever decision she makes.

My eyes burned.

“You finally told everyone.”

“Yes.”

“After I left.”

“Yes.”

“That matters.”

“I know.”

I handed back the phone.

“You don’t get a medal.”

“I know.”

Something about his refusal to defend himself made anger harder.

Then he said:

“I also resigned as chairman of the Moretti family trust.”

I looked up.

“What?”

“Effective immediately.”

“Why?”

“Because Salvatore is using power I inherited to threaten you.”

He paused.

“And because maybe I should have asked years ago whether I wanted that power at all.”

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice said:

“Mrs. Moretti?”

Every muscle in my body tightened.

Then:

“Marco Bellini wants to make a deal.”

I looked at Adrian.

The voice continued:

“He says he’ll testify against Salvatore.”

May you like

A pause.

“But only if he speaks to you first.”
