Chapter 7 - THE VIDEO MY GRANDMOTHER LEFT BEHIND

Margaret Carter appeared on the television wearing a blue cardigan.
Thinner than Emily remembered.
Older.
But still terrifyingly composed.
Lily whispered:
“Grandma.”
Emily grabbed her daughter’s hand.
The recording began.
Emily, if you are seeing this, I failed to keep the past away from you.
Emily cried immediately.
Margaret continued.
That may have been a mistake from the beginning.
Your father believed secrecy would protect you.
Antonio Moretti believed the same.
So did I.
We were all wrong in different ways.
Dominic looked down.
Even dead, Margaret did not spare anyone.
She explained Thomas discovered Vincent’s financial crimes.
Antonio agreed to expose him privately and remove him from control.
But Vincent learned Thomas had records.
One night, Thomas was attacked leaving the Moretti warehouse.
Margaret did not know who ordered it.
She refused to claim what she could not prove.
Thomas survived.
Antonio moved him to Canada.
“Antonio?”
Emily looked at Dominic.
Margaret answered from the screen.
Antonio believed Vincent would keep searching if Thomas returned.
So he arranged a new identity.
Thomas agreed.
That decision broke our family.
Emily’s tears became anger.
“My father chose it.”
“Yes,” Dominic said quietly.
Margaret continued.
Thomas intended to return once Vincent lost power.
But Antonio never fully removed his brother.
Family pressure.
Company instability.
Fear of scandal.
Excuses multiplied.
Then Antonio died.
Dominic inherited a company without the full truth.
Vincent remained.
Thomas stayed hidden.
Years became a life.
Emily whispered:
“He could’ve called.”
No one disagreed.
Then Margaret explained the red ledger.
It documented the original diverted pension money.
The restoration payments.
And something Antonio created as compensation.
A trust.
For Emily Carter.
Emily stared.
“Of course there’s a trust.”
Dominic almost smiled at the bitterness.
Margaret said the trust was not charity.
Thomas owned twelve percent of Carter Asset Management, which later invested in legitimate Moretti real estate projects.
Those holdings grew.
Antonio preserved Thomas’s interest.
When Thomas disappeared, the shares remained in trust.
Current ownership?
Unknown to Margaret when she recorded the video.
But significant.
Then:
Vincent always believed Thomas transferred those shares back to Moretti.
He did not.
They belong to you, Emily.
Emily went still.
Dominic looked at Marco.
“Find the trust.”
Margaret continued.
Do not let anyone tell you this makes you part of their family.
You owe the Morettis nothing.
Dominic almost laughed.
He liked her.
Then the final section.
Dominic, if you are watching—
He straightened.
Your father loved you. But he taught you loyalty before truth.
Do not repeat that mistake.
Emily looked at him.
Margaret continued:
There is one name you will find in the ledger that will hurt you.
Do not destroy the evidence to protect that person.
The tape ended.
Silence.
Dominic opened the ledger.
Old pages.
Transfers.
Initials.
V.M.
Stephen Lombardi.
Carlo Bellini.
Then a name written beside several authorization codes.
ISABELLA MORETTI.
Dominic’s mother.
Still alive.
Still living at the Moretti estate.
Marco whispered:
“Dominic…”
He stared at the page.
May you like
Margaret had warned him correctly.
The truth had just reached his mother.
