Chapter 11 - THE ROOM BENEATH MORETTI PLAZA

Carlo Bellini had hidden evidence inside Moretti Plaza.

That was the final joke.

Everyone spent years searching houses.

Warehouses.

Foreign accounts.

The truth sat beneath Dominic’s office building.

Marco knew the old security systems better than anyone.

His father designed them.

He remembered one unexplained maintenance room beneath Parking Level Four.

No official purpose.

No access record.

At midnight, they opened it.

The room contained analog recording equipment.

Hard drives.

Duplicate camera feeds.

Carlo had built an independent archive no executive could erase.

Marco stood in the doorway.

“My father made a second system.”

Dominic nodded.

“For Vincent.”

“For everyone.”

That sounded like Carlo.

Trust nobody completely.

Especially family.

The archive contained thousands of hours.

They narrowed dates.

Thomas’s attack.

Carlo’s death.

Emily’s termination.

The latest footage showed Stephen Lombardi entering Hudson House.

But older footage mattered more.

Eight years ago.

Carlo met Vincent in the Plaza garage.

Audio existed.

Vincent:

You are becoming a problem.

Carlo:

I learned from Thomas.

Vincent:

Thomas ran.

Carlo:

Thomas survived.

Then Carlo:

If you touch me, Dominic gets the pension files.

Vincent laughed.

Touch you? Carlo, you make everything sound theatrical.

No confession.

Then camera footage from later that night.

Carlo left.

A black SUV followed.

Registered to a Vincent-controlled security company.

Again, circumstantial.

Then the next day Carlo’s boating accident occurred.

Marco looked murderous.

Dominic said:

“Proof first.”

“I know.”

He did.

That was growth.

Then the archive revealed something unexpected.

Antonio Moretti had visited the room before his own death.

Recording dated twelve years earlier.

Antonio sat alone.

He spoke toward the camera.

Dominic.

If Carlo shows you this, I failed to clean my own house.

Dominic’s throat tightened.

His father looked tired.

Not powerful.

Old.

Antonio admitted he allowed Vincent to remain because exposing him would reveal illegal methods used to restore pension money.

He feared prison.

Scandal.

Family collapse.

So he compromised.

Again and again.

Then:

Compromise becomes corruption when you repeat it long enough.

Dominic closed his eyes.

Antonio continued.

Thomas Carter deserved better.

Margaret deserved truth.

Emily deserves what is hers.

And you deserve a father who did not hand you unfinished crimes disguised as family obligations.

Emily looked at Dominic.

He remained still.

Then Antonio said:

There is one document Vincent could never find.

Original equity assignment to Thomas Carter.

Where?

Antonio smiled faintly.

In the one place Vincent would never voluntarily open.

My will.

Dominic’s father’s will had been probated twelve years earlier.

Public portions.

Not private sealed codicil.

Marco contacted estate counsel.

There was one sealed supplement.

Release condition:

Discovery of Carter heir within Moretti employment.

That condition had occurred.

Emily.

The codicil was opened the next morning.

Antonio formally assigned the Moretti-linked equity to Thomas’s trust.

Valid.

Signed.

Witnessed.

Irrevocable.

Emily’s ownership was real.

Then came another clause.

If Vincent Moretti or any entity under his control interfered with the Carter beneficiary’s employment, property, or claim, Vincent’s own family voting trust lost its special veto authority.

Dominic read it twice.

Vincent had forged Emily’s termination letter.

May you like

By trying to remove her, he may have destroyed his last protection.

His own plan had triggered the mechanism designed to defeat him.
