Chapter 9 - ESTEBAN ASKED RAMON TO CHOOSE THE FAMILY NAME

“Come alone.”
Ramon almost laughed.
“No.”
Esteban went silent.
They had not spoken since the forest.
“You think I’m going to walk into another family secret because you asked nicely?”
“You’ve become dramatic.”
“Sofia ran barefoot through a forest.”
That silenced him.
Then Esteban said:
“You don’t understand what Gabriel’s return will do.”
“Explain.”
“Banks will panic.”
“Maybe.”
“Partners will question succession.”
“They should.”
“Enemies will smell weakness.”
Ramon looked through the hospital glass at Gabriel asleep beside Sofia.
“Then let them smell.”
Esteban’s voice hardened.
“You sound like your father before everything collapsed.”
“No.”
Ramon looked at Antonio’s letter.
“I sound like him after.”
Then Esteban offered a deal.
He would surrender management authority.
Return certain assets.
Help recover missing money.
Disappear quietly.
In exchange:
No public investigation.
No state authorities.
No exposure of Gabriel’s disappearance.
Protect the Ortega name.
Twenty years earlier, Antonio might have agreed.
Ramon did not.
“No.”
“You’ll destroy us.”
“No.”
“I’m refusing to let the name matter more than people.”
Esteban laughed.
“You think legitimacy makes you clean?”
Ramon said nothing.
He knew what he was.
A feared man.
A powerful man.
A man whose family history contained things no annual report could sanitize.
This story was not about pretending otherwise.
It was about what he chose now.
Esteban continued.
“Gabriel signed documents.”
“Under pressure.”
“He took family money.”
“To survive.”
“Elena entered our property under false pretenses.”
“To find her father.”
“Samuel disappeared willingly.”
“Because your lawyer threatened his daughter.”
Silence.
Then Ramon said:
“It ends.”
Esteban’s voice changed.
“Careful.”
Ramon almost smiled.
“Uncle, you taught me fear works only while the other person believes you control what happens next.”
Then he hung up.
Investigators moved on Esteban’s known properties through legal channels.
Accounts were preserved.
Corporate authority suspended.
Victor Hale remained missing.
Sheriff Halden cooperated.
Then a twist nobody expected:
Esteban did not flee.
He arrived at the main Ortega office the next morning.
Alone.
No guards.
No lawyer.
He walked into the boardroom and placed a flash drive on the table.
“I’m done.”
Ramon stared.
“What is that?”
“Everything Victor kept from me.”
Esteban looked older.
For the first time, not powerful.
Just tired.
“He started taking more than we agreed.”
Ramon’s jaw tightened.
“We?”
Esteban closed his eyes.
Then confessed.
He had originally kept Gabriel hidden after Antonio’s stroke.
Yes.
He had manipulated the trust.
Yes.
He had used Halden.
Yes.
But Victor Hale gradually turned the system into his own empire.
Some of the missing $70 million belonged to Victor’s network.
Esteban had lost control years earlier.
“Why not tell me?”
Esteban laughed bitterly.
“Because then I’d have to admit what I did first.”
There it was again.
Truth delayed because shame felt more dangerous than consequences.
Then Esteban said:
“Victor is still in the woods.”
Ramon became still.
“Where?”
“There’s another site.”
He slid a map across the table.
“And he has someone with him.”
“Who?”
Esteban looked directly at Ramon.
“Your mother’s former nurse.”
Ramon frowned.
Why would that matter?
May you like
Then Esteban whispered:
“Because she knows your father’s stroke wasn’t natural.”
