Chapter 3 - THE CRYPT UNDER THE CHAPEL WAS EMPTY

The chapel smelled like wet stone and old wood.
Ramon had not entered it in six years.
Not since his mother’s memorial.
Victor walked behind him.
Diego and Matteo searched the perimeter.
State investigators had already been informed about Elena’s statement, but Ramon had one advantage they did not.
He knew the building.
Behind the altar stood a bronze wolf carved into the wall.
The Ortega symbol.
THE WOLF IS UNDER THE CHAPEL.
Ramon pressed the carving.
Nothing.
Victor studied the floor.
“Boss.”
One stone tile beneath the wolf looked newer.
They lifted it.
A narrow metal ring appeared.
Below:
Stairs.
Ramon stared.
“I grew up here.”
“And never knew?”
“No.”
The underground chamber was not a crypt.
It was an archive.
Metal shelves.
Old boxes.
A desk.
Battery lamps.
Someone had been using it recently.
There were empty water bottles.
Medical supplies.
A blanket.
And on the desk:
A child’s drawing.
Three people holding hands.
A woman.
A little girl.
A man labeled DAD.
Ramon picked it up.
Sofia.
Gabriel had been here.
Recently.
Victor found a laptop.
Encrypted.
Matteo found photographs.
Blackwood Recovery.
Doctors.
Vehicles.
A county official.
Then Diego called from the rear wall.
“Ramon.”
He almost never used Ramon’s first name while working.
That made him turn immediately.
Diego held a photograph.
Esteban Ortega stood outside Blackwood Recovery.
Beside him was a younger Gabriel.
The date:
Nine years earlier.
Two weeks after Gabriel’s funeral.
Ramon stared.
Esteban had known.
Not suspected.
Known.
Then Victor found a recorder.
One file.
Ramon pressed play.
Static.
Then Gabriel’s voice.
Older.
Weaker.
“Ramon…”
Ramon closed his eyes.
His brother’s voice.
Real.
“If you found this, Elena reached you.”
A breath.
“Sofia too, I hope.”
Ramon gripped the desk.
“Listen carefully. Esteban kept me hidden, but he didn’t create the first plan.”
Ramon’s eyes opened.
“It started with Dad.”
Silence filled the chamber.
Gabriel continued.
“Father faked my death.”
Victor stared at Ramon.
Ramon felt the floor shift beneath him.
Their father, Antonio Ortega, had died five years ago.
A feared man.
A complicated man.
But their father.
Why would he fake his own son’s death?
Gabriel answered.
“I found evidence that someone inside the family was selling information to our enemies. Dad believed they were coming for me first.”
He arranged the warehouse fire.
Fake remains.
Duplicate ring.
New identity.
The original plan was temporary.
Gabriel was supposed to disappear for three months.
Then Antonio would expose the traitor.
“But three months became six.”
Gabriel’s voice hardened.
“Then Dad had a stroke.”
Antonio lost much of his speech and control afterward.
Esteban assumed more power.
Gabriel remained hidden.
Then:
“Esteban told everyone I was safer dead.”
Ramon’s jaw tightened.
Gabriel continued.
“That was a lie.”
The original threat had ended years earlier.
Esteban kept Gabriel hidden because Gabriel’s return would trigger an old inheritance clause.
A clause Ramon had never known existed.
Then the recording ended with one final sentence:
“If I’m alive, Esteban loses control of half the Ortega holdings.”
Ramon stared at the dark recorder.
May you like
His uncle had not kept Gabriel hidden to protect him.
He had kept him hidden because a living Gabriel was financially dangerous.
