Chapter 7 - ELENA HAD COME LOOKING FOR THE ORTEGAS TOO

Elena had never planned to fall in love with Gabriel.
That was the part she almost seemed embarrassed to admit.
“My father disappeared when I was twelve.”
Samuel Morales had worked for Antonio Ortega’s holding companies.
He handled internal audits.
One afternoon, he told his wife he had discovered “a hole inside the family books.”
Three days later, he vanished.
No body.
No arrest.
Nothing.
Elena grew up with one belief:
The Ortega family had silenced him.
So when she saw Blackwood Recovery on a list of properties once linked to an Ortega shell company, she applied for work.
She wanted records.
Names.
Anything.
Instead she found Gabriel.
“At first I thought he was part of it.”
Gabriel looked offended from his hospital bed.
“I was sedated in a locked clinic.”
“You were still an Ortega.”
“Fair.”
Elena gradually realized Gabriel knew nothing about Samuel.
Then Gabriel helped her investigate.
Their two mysteries became one.
Because Samuel had discovered the same financial structure that later trapped Gabriel.
The person Samuel had accused?
Esteban.
Twenty years earlier.
Long before Antonio’s stroke.
Long before Gabriel disappeared.
Ramon sat back.
“So Father knew Esteban was stealing?”
“Samuel believed he suspected.”
“Then why not remove him?”
Elena shook her head.
“Family.”
One word.
Enough.
Antonio protected his brother.
The problem grew.
Years later, when Gabriel discovered related transactions, Antonio finally tried to expose Esteban.
But by then, rivals were watching the family too.
So Antonio staged Gabriel’s temporary death while he investigated quietly.
Then the stroke happened.
Esteban seized the opening.
History became a prison.
Then Elena showed Ramon the most important document Samuel left.
A photocopied ledger page.
Account:
ORCHARD RESERVE.
Twenty years of hidden transfers.
At first small.
Then enormous.
Current estimated missing value, including investments:
Over $70 million.
Ramon exhaled.
“Where did it go?”
Elena looked toward Gabriel.
“We think Esteban built an escape fund.”
Properties.
Foreign accounts.
Private companies.
Not criminal instructions.
Just evidence of long-term theft.
Then Samuel’s name appeared in one old transaction.
Final payment:
$250,000.
Memo:
SETTLEMENT — MORALES.
Elena’s face went pale.
“My father wasn’t paid $250,000.”
Then Ramon’s investigators found the recipient.
Not Samuel.
A trust account controlled by Victor Hale.
The lawyer had used Samuel’s name.
What happened to Samuel remained unknown.
Then Sofia entered the hospital room holding crayons.
Everyone stopped talking.
She climbed beside Gabriel.
“Are you talking about Grandpa Samuel?”
Elena smiled.
“Yes.”
Sofia frowned.
“I know where he is.”
Three adults froze.
Elena turned.
“What?”
Sofia shrugged.
“Daddy showed me.”
Gabriel’s face changed.
“Sofia…”
She continued innocently.
“The old man in the picture.”
“What picture?”
“The one at the cabin.”
Gabriel closed his eyes.
He had found Samuel two years earlier.
May you like
Alive.
And he had never told Elena.
