Chapter 8 - THE TRAP CLOSED AROUND EVERYONE

Marco was arrested before sunrise.
He tried to cross into Canada using false identification.
No shootout.
No dramatic chase.
Just a border officer, a flagged passport, and handcuffs.
He cooperated faster than Luca expected.
Self-preservation remains one of the world’s most reliable motives.
Marco admitted Luca recruited him two years earlier.
At first, he supplied schedules.
Then security footage.
Then access.
He knew about Sofia.
Knew about the plan to trigger the descendant trust.
Did he arrange the affair?
“No.”
That mattered.
Sofia and Adrian met naturally through business.
Luca noticed Adrian’s interest.
Then cultivated it.
Assigned Sofia more projects.
Scheduled late meetings.
Created travel overlap.
Opportunity.
Not force.
Adrian still chose.
Again.
That distinction never changed.
Marco also admitted the financial account in my name was intended as leverage.
If I signed the waiver, Luca planned to close it quietly.
If I refused, anonymous evidence would reach federal agents.
“Why not just kill Claire?” one investigator asked.
The question chilled me.
Marco answered:
“Too much attention. Luca wanted her scared, not dead.”
Somehow that was not comforting.
Then Luca finally contacted Adrian.
Not me.
Video call.
Adrian allowed federal agents to record it.
Luca appeared in what looked like a hotel room.
“You brought the government into our house.”
Adrian’s face stayed cold.
“You brought my wife into your crimes.”
Luca laughed.
“Your wife?”
He leaned closer.
“You replaced her before I touched anything.”
Adrian absorbed the hit.
Did not deny it.
Luca continued.
“You’re turning over ledgers for a woman divorcing you.”
“No.”
Adrian glanced at me through the observation glass.
“I’m turning them over because I should.”
Luca’s smile disappeared.
Good.
Then Adrian asked:
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere your new friends won’t find me.”
They found him forty-eight hours later.
Sofia’s father, Salvatore Russo, betrayed him.
Not out of morality.
Because prosecutors offered a better deal.
Again.
No clean heroes.
Luca was arrested in a private apartment in Miami.
Documents recovered with him included the original trust records, my forged signature files, and a draft board resolution removing Adrian the moment Sofia’s child trust activated.
The conspiracy was over.
The consequences were not.
Federal investigators now possessed Moretti criminal ledgers.
Adrian’s ledgers.
His signatures.
His instructions.
His money.
Daniel Shaw entered my hotel suite carrying a preliminary plea framework.
Adrian read it.
I watched his face change.
Potential charges:
Financial conspiracy.
Illegal gambling proceeds.
Obstruction-related conduct.
Extortionate business practices.
Possible incarceration.
Adrian closed the folder.
Then handed it back.
“Tell them I’ll cooperate fully.”
Daniel stared.
“No carve-outs?”
“No.”
“What about family members?”
“No.”
“What about your mother?”
Bianca went white.
Adrian’s answer did not change.
“No.”
For the first time in his life, he chose truth even when it could destroy his own family.
Then he turned to me.
“I need one thing before this happens.”
I stiffened.
“What?”
“The divorce papers.”
I stared.
He swallowed.
“You asked me to let you go.”
May you like
His voice broke.
“I’m going to sign.”
