Chapter 2 - ADRIAN KNEW ABOUT THE TRUST

Adrian found my hotel at 5:48 in the morning.
I did not open the door.
He called instead.
“I’m outside.”
“I know.”
“How?”
“Rachel checked the hallway camera.”
Silence.
“Who’s Rachel?”
“My attorney.”
That landed.
“Claire.”
“You have five minutes on the phone.”
“I need to see you.”
“No.”
“I’m your husband.”
“Temporarily.”
His breathing changed.
Good.
I asked:
“Do you know what the Moretti Legacy Settlement is?”
Silence.
My anger sharpened.
“Adrian.”
“Yes.”
“Do you know I become temporary protector if you have a biological child?”
“Yes.”
I closed my eyes.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“Did you know somebody filed a waiver in my name?”
“No.”
Immediate.
I listened carefully.
“I swear to you, Claire.”
“Your oaths are not particularly valuable today.”
He said nothing.
“Why didn’t you tell me about the trust?”
“Because until there was a child, it didn’t matter.”
I almost laughed.
“There was a child coming while you were still telling me we weren’t ready to have one.”
Painful silence.
“That was cowardly.”
“No. Cowardly is telling me you’re afraid your life is too dangerous for children while having unprotected sex with somebody else.”
“I know.”
That answer stopped me briefly.
No defense.
Then:
“When did Sofia tell you?”
“Yesterday morning.”
“The ultrasound was dated yesterday.”
“Yes.”
“You’ve been sleeping with her for six months.”
“Yes.”
Every yes felt like a small cut.
“How often?”
“Claire—”
“You don’t get privacy now.”
He breathed out slowly.
“Maybe twelve times.”
I stared at the hotel wall.
The number made everything worse because it was ordinary.
Not one drunken night.
Not one lapse.
Appointments.
Choices.
Repeated.
I continued.
“Did Sofia know about the descendant trust?”
“I don’t know.”
“That means yes or you’re an idiot.”
“Possibly both.”
I almost hated him for making me want to laugh.
I didn’t.
“Did your mother know?”
Another pause.
“Yes.”
My stomach dropped.
“Bianca knew about Sofia?”
“Three months.”
“And said nothing to me.”
“Yes.”
“Did she know Sofia might be pregnant?”
“I don’t know.”
I heard a voice in the hallway.
Adrian speaking away from the phone.
Then returning.
“Claire, let me come inside.”
“No.”
“Somebody forged your signature. That means this isn’t only about us anymore.”
“Everything became about ‘us’ when you slept with Sofia.”
He absorbed that.
Then I asked:
“Who benefits if I waive protector status?”
“Sofia gets temporary guardian authority over the descendant trust.”
“And?”
“Combined with family-aligned voting shares…”
He stopped.
“How much power?”
“Enough to challenge my control of Moretti Holdings.”
There it was.
The unborn baby was not only a child.
It was a corporate weapon.
“Who would challenge you?”
“Luca.”
His cousin.
His general counsel.
The man who visited my mother.
Adrian continued.
“Luca controls eleven percent personally and influences another nine through family trusts. If Sofia controls the descendant block, he gets the votes he needs to remove me as managing chairman.”
I sat very still.
“So your affair created the one thing your cousin needed to take your company.”
“Yes.”
Again, no excuse.
Then Rachel texted me.
I found the notary.
I opened the attachment.
The waiver had been notarized remotely.
Approving witness:
BIANCA MORETTI.
Adrian’s mother.
I showed him over video.
For the first time since he arrived, the most feared man in Chicago looked completely stunned.
“My mother signed that?”
“She attested that she watched me sign.”
His face hardened.
“She’s lying.”
“Your family seems unusually comfortable signing things for me.”
Then another message arrived from Rachel.
May you like
Bianca had not only witnessed the waiver.
She had submitted it herself to the trust administrator.
