Chapter 5 - THE FILE THAT PROVED ADRIAN WAS NOT INNOCENT

Part of me wanted the flash drive to contain nothing.
That embarrassed me.
Not because I wanted Adrian back.
Because I wanted one corner of my old life to remain uncomplicated.
It didn’t.
Rachel arranged for a forensic copy before we opened anything.
Folders.
Payments.
Audio.
Photographs.
Encrypted ledgers.
Then:
A.M. AUTHORIZATIONS.
Adrian’s initials.
I clicked.
Two years earlier, a warehouse contractor named Peter Nolan had threatened to testify about illegal labor payments connected to a Moretti construction project.
A message from Adrian:
Make sure Nolan understands what happens if he drags families into this. No permanent damage. I want him frightened, not buried.
My stomach turned.
I looked at Adrian.
He did not deny it.
“You ordered men to threaten him.”
“Yes.”
“Did they hurt him?”
“They broke his car windows and cornered him outside a bar.”
I stared.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“Was he injured?”
“Bruised.”
I stood.
He did not reach for me.
Good.
“You told me the private side of your life never came home.”
“It didn’t.”
“That is such a disgusting distinction.”
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Another file.
Illegal cash routed through restaurant supply contracts.
Adrian approved settlements.
Payments to local officials.
Not everything.
Enough.
I had known the Moretti name came with darkness.
Knowing abstractly was different from reading instructions written by the man who slept beside me.
“You kept me ignorant.”
“Yes.”
“To protect me?”
“At first.”
“And later?”
He looked at me.
“Because I knew you might leave.”
There it was.
Again.
Control through withheld information.
The affair was only the newest version.
I looked at Sofia’s evidence.
“Why would Luca keep these files?”
“Insurance.”
Adrian answered before anyone else.
“If I moved against him, he could turn me in.”
Rachel said:
“Then perhaps you should get independent criminal counsel.”
Adrian almost laughed.
“I have criminal counsel.”
“Not Moretti counsel.”
That sobered him.
Good.
He called an attorney named Daniel Shaw, former federal prosecutor, no family connection.
Another correct decision.
Then Priya—brought in by Rachel—examined the files.
Luca had been quietly rerouting legitimate company money into entities controlled by Salvatore Russo.
Millions.
Adrian did not know.
But the illicit system Adrian tolerated made it easier to hide.
That distinction mattered.
I told him:
“You built a house with secret rooms. Now you’re surprised somebody used one.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
No defense.
Then we found a folder named:
BENNETT.
My maiden name.
Photographs of me.
Leaving the grocery store.
At my mother’s house.
At a museum fundraiser.
At the hotel that morning.
Dates going back four months.
Before Sofia said she knew she was pregnant.
Before the anniversary call.
I felt suddenly cold.
“Why were they watching me?”
Priya opened a planning memorandum.
Obstacle: Claire Moretti retains spousal protector authority until waiver or dissolution.
Below:
Pressure options: marital exposure / reputational leverage / financial contamination.
Rachel’s face hardened.
“What does financial contamination mean?”
We found out ten minutes later.
A bank account existed in my maiden name.
$940,000 inside.
Money routed from a Moretti shell company.
Transactions designed to look as though I had been receiving criminal proceeds.
I stared at the account.
Someone had created evidence that could make me look complicit.
And the account application contained security answers only a handful of people knew.
My first pet.
My childhood street.
My mother’s maiden name.
May you like
Information I had once told Adrian in bed.
And, according to deleted messages on Sofia’s phone, information Adrian had later casually shared with her during their affair.
