Chapter 9 - THE CHILD CLAIRE HID FOR TWENTY YEARS

Claire had been pregnant twice.

Megan knew about Rachel.

She did not know about the first baby.

A boy.

Born before Megan.

Officially stillborn.

Except he wasn’t.

Claire had delivered at a private clinic connected to the Mason family.

Elliot arranged the paperwork.

Why?

Because the father was my father.

The room went silent.

Megan stared at me.

“My mother had a child with your father?”

I felt sick.

Not because of scandal.

Because of what it meant.

A hidden son.

My half-brother.

Elliot had leverage over Claire before Megan was even born.

“Did she consent?” Megan asked.

Important.

Elliot answered:

“Yes.”

His tone irritated me.

We did not trust him.

Later, Claire’s journals confirmed it.

My father and Claire had a brief relationship years before he hired her as nurse.

It ended.

Then she discovered pregnancy.

My father wanted to acknowledge the child.

Elliot opposed it.

A second Mason heir complicated succession.

So Elliot faked the baby’s death.

Claire believed him for two years.

Then she learned the truth.

Her son lived.

Placed under another name.

That was why she stayed near the family.

Not for money.

To find him.

Megan cried.

“My mother lost a son.”

“Yes.”

“And never found him?”

Maybe.

The journal’s final entry suggested otherwise.

I saw him today. He has Gabriel’s eyes. Elliot does not know I know.

Gabriel.

My father.

She found the boy.

Who?

The age would be forty.

Close to Marcus.

No.

He was thirty-nine.

My security chief.

I looked at him.

Marcus looked confused.

Then afraid.

“What?”

We tested.

My father’s DNA stored in old medical records.

Marcus.

Probability of paternity:

99.97%.

The room changed.

Marcus Vale.

My chief of security.

My half-brother.

He sat down.

For fifteen years, he had protected me.

Never knowing why my father’s house felt familiar.

Never knowing Claire had watched him from a distance.

Megan looked at him.

“You’re my mother’s son.”

Marcus stared.

“She was my mother?”

“Yes.”

He covered his face.

For once, the hardest man in my organization cried openly.

Then another realization.

Elliot hired Marcus fifteen years ago.

Why?

Not coincidence.

He knew exactly who Marcus was.

He kept the hidden heir close.

Controlled.

Useful.

If needed, removable.

Marcus stood.

“I’m going to kill him.”

I looked at him.

Old instinct recognized old instinct.

“No.”

He glared.

“He stole my mother.”

“Yes.”

“My name.”

“Yes.”

“My life.”

“Yes.”

“And you’re telling me no?”

“I’m telling you killing him gives him an ending he controls.”

Silence.

Megan looked at me.

Something like approval.

Strange how good that felt.

Then police called.

Elliot had been arrested.

Alive.

But before they could transport him, he requested one person.

Not me.

Not Marcus.

Megan.

May you like

He said Claire left something with her.

Something that could destroy all of us.
