Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT BEFORE MY FATHER DIED

My father had been poisoned before the crash.
Not enough to kill him.
Enough to make him dizzy.
Slow.
Vulnerable.
Claire saw Elliot put something into his whiskey.
She warned my father.
He did not believe her.
Or did not want to.
Family blindness.
I understood it.
Claire stole the glass.
Had it tested.
Sedative.
Same drug later found in me.
The plan became clear.
My father drugged.
Me drugged.
Car on mountain road.
Crash.
Two deaths.
Except I survived.
Then my survival became another problem.
Elliot needed me alive enough to avoid suspicion.
Incapacitated enough to control the empire.
Wheelchair.
Dependence.
Hayes.
Perfect.
Megan looked sick.
“My mother knew all this?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t she expose it?”
Nancy answered softly:
“Because Elliot threatened you.”
Megan stopped.
“What?”
“You were fourteen.”
Her eyes filled.
“He knew where you went to school.”
Megan looked toward Noah.
The pattern.
Threaten the child.
Silence the parent.
Then the bank vault opened.
Box 17 contained:
Claire’s written statement.
My father’s original toxicology sample.
An audio cassette.
And a photograph.
Claire holding teenage Megan.
My father standing beside them.
I stared.
“You met him.”
Megan shook her head.
“I don’t remember.”
“You were fourteen.”
“I would remember.”
The photograph was dated four months before the crash.
Megan looked frightened.
“My mother took me somewhere in Atlanta once.”
“Where?”
“A medical charity event.”
I remembered.
My father hosted one every year.
Then the cassette.
His voice.
“Claire, if Elliot moves against Dominic, take your daughter and disappear.”
Megan began crying.
My father continued:
“Megan’s name is on the trust because Elliot cannot seize funds assigned outside the Mason line.”
I frowned.
What funds?
Then:
“I’m setting aside enough to protect you both.”
Megan looked at me.
“No.”
I understood.
She hated what it sounded like.
Payoff.
No.
The tape continued.
“Not payment.”
My father apparently anticipated that too.
“Insurance.”
Then he said something that changed everything.
“Claire saved Dominic once already.”
I turned toward Nancy.
“What does that mean?”
She looked confused.
The tape answered.
“Last month, Hayes tried to begin the paralysis protocol early.”
My heart stopped.
The crash had not been the first attempt.
Claire had prevented Hayes from injecting me at a charity clinic.
She saved me.
Then four months later, they succeeded.
Megan wiped her face.
“My mother saved you.”
“Yes.”
“And you never knew.”
“No.”
The tape continued.
“If I die, Dominic must be told one thing.”
Static.
Then my father’s voice:
“His spine is not destroyed.”
My hands went numb.
“His condition can be reversed.”
Silence filled the vault room.
May you like
Then Megan whispered:
“You might be able to walk.”
