Chapter 11 - THE PROSECUTOR WHO WAS ALSO MY SISTER

Elena Mason knew.
That was the worst part.
She had known for five years.
About my father.
About Marcus.
About me.
She did not approach.
Why?
Because she was building a case against Elliot.
Her mother had been one of Gabriel Mason’s long-term partners before his marriage.
Messy.
Complicated.
Human.
Elena grew up under another surname.
Found proof after her mother died.
Then spent years gathering financial evidence.
When Elliot’s case landed in her jurisdiction, she recused herself immediately.
Correct.
Ethical.
Annoying.
I respected it.
We met in a courthouse conference room.
She looked like my father around the eyes.
So did Marcus.
Apparently I had spent fifteen years surrounded by pieces of a family I never knew existed.
Elena looked at Megan.
“Claire was brave.”
Megan’s eyes filled.
“You knew her?”
“Briefly.”
“When?”
“Five years ago.”
Megan sat forward.
“My mother was alive then.”
“Yes.”
“You spoke to her?”
“Yes.”
“Did she know about Marcus?”
Elena nodded.
“She knew.”
Marcus looked away.
“She wanted to tell him.”
“Why didn’t she?”
“She was sick.”
Megan closed her eyes.
Claire had cancer by then.
She feared giving Marcus a mother only to lose her months later.
Another choice made through fear.
Another secret that hurt despite good intentions.
Megan whispered:
“She should have told him.”
Elena nodded.
“Yes.”
No defense.
Good.
Then Elena revealed why the fever happened now.
Elliot learned the investigation was close.
He ordered Hayes to kill me before the financial case opened.
Why?
Because my death triggered a succession clause.
Temporary control of Mason holdings moved to the senior surviving family executive.
Elliot.
Again.
Same motive as fourteen years ago.
He never changed.
He simply waited.
Then Megan asked:
“Why put me in the house?”
Elena answered:
“He didn’t.”
We all froze.
“What?”
“The agency recommendation was forged, yes.”
“But not by Elliot.”
“Who?”
Elena looked at Marcus.
Marcus stared.
“No.”
He had no memory of doing it.
Then Elena smiled slightly.
“Claire.”
Silence.
Claire arranged Megan’s application before she died.
A delayed placement through an employment agency.
Why?
She wanted Megan inside my house eventually.
Not as bait.
As connection.
She believed if Megan met Dominic, truth might surface.
Megan looked furious.
“My mother planned my job from the grave?”
“Yes.”
I looked at her.
“I agree that is upsetting.”
“Thank you.”
Elena handed over Claire’s final letter.
Meg, if you ever end up working for Dominic Mason, leave if he scares you.
I winced.
Megan smiled.
Then:
Stay only if he learns to listen.
She looked at me.
I looked away.
Then one last line:
And if Marcus is there, tell him I am sorry I watched from a distance.
Marcus began crying again.
May you like
Nobody mocked him.
Not in that room.
