Chapter 9 - The Intercepted Audio

The suffocating silence in the grand ballroom was so profound that the hum of the air conditioning sounded like a jet engine.

Julian Sterling scrambled backward against the executive lectern, knocking over his leather portfolio as his sweat-stained collar choked him.

“Dominic…?” Julian stammered, his voice cracking into an unrecognizable squeak.

“You… you were supposed to be dead in the ICU!”

Dominic walked slowly to the base of the VIP stage, his footsteps echoing with the terrifying finality of a firing squad.

“I survived your assassins, Julian,” Dominic spoke, every word cutting through the room like an iron blade.

“And I brought the true governing owner of this empire to collect your resignation.”

Dominic signaled Arthur Montgomery, who tapped the master multimedia console, activating the gigantic eighty-foot 8K digital projection displays spanning the ballroom.

The screens illuminated with the unredacted digital telemetry extracted from the hospital ambush forty-eight hours prior.

The crystal-clear audio filled the ballroom with Julian’s recorded voice speaking to his mercenary commander on an encrypted satellite channel:

”Target is in Room 402; eliminate the doctor, shoot the child in her bed, and ensure Dominic does not survive the night.”

A collective gasp of profound horror and revulsion swept through the five hundred high-society guests, several board members backing away from Julian in utter disgust.

Vivienne Thorne began to hyperventilate, clutching her ruby gown as the entire room looked upon her with unadulterated hatred.

“That is a fabricated deepfake recording!” Julian shrieked hysterically, pointing a trembling finger at the screens.

“You paid some offshore hacker to doctor those files, Dominic!”

Dominic tapped the terminal again, switching the wall displays to the authenticated toxicological reports from Harvard Medical School.

The chemical diagrams of concentrated aconitine and synthetic digitalis illuminated the room in bright, condemning crimson graphics.

“This is the toxicological proof of the chemical poisoning that murdered my father on Storrow Drive six years ago, Julian,” Dominic announced to the horrified room.

“Every wire transfer of twenty million dollars from your Cayman holding entities to the assassination cartel has been authenticated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

The heavy bronze doors swung open once more, and Special Agent Marcus Reed of the FBI walked into the room flanked by twelve armed federal agents.

Agent Reed held a stack of red-sealed federal RICO arrest warrants, his gold badge gleaming under the crystal chandeliers.

“Julian Sterling and Vivienne Thorne, by order of the United States District Court, you are officially under arrest,” Agent Reed declared in a booming voice.

“The charges include first-degree premeditated murder, attempted murder of a minor, corporate treason, and interstate racketeering.”
