Chapter 8 - The Poisoned Gala

On Sunday evening, the grand ballroom of the Boston Harbor Hotel was bathed in dazzling crystal light and filled with five hundred of the city’s most powerful figures.

Billionaires, corrupt politicians, federal judges, and corporate titans sipped vintage champagne beneath soaring crystal chandeliers.

Julian Sterling stood at the center of the raised VIP dais wearing an extravagant ivory tuxedo, holding a glass of Dom Pérignon, laughing loudly with his inner circle.

Beside him stood Vivienne Thorne, his high-society mistress and co-conspirator, draped in a backless ruby-red silk gown and diamond chokers.

“To the dawning of a new era for Sterling Global!” Julian proclaimed into the microphone, raising his flute to the cheering crowd.

“Following the tragic incapacitation of my cousin Dominic in an underworld altercation, our executive committee has finalized the emergency succession charter!”

“As of midnight tonight, all thirty-two billion dollars in maritime logistics assets will be safely consolidated under the Thorne-Sterling International Alliance!”

The high-society crowd erupted into enthusiastic applause, raising their crystal glasses to toast the newly crowned king of Boston commerce.

Julian smiled triumphantly, signaling his lead corporate attorney to step forward with the master signing parchment.

Before the golden fountain pen could touch the signature line, the massive, eight-foot reinforced bronze double doors of the ballroom were blown off their hinges with a concussive roar.

The concussive blast shattered the decorative partition walls, sending shards of safety glass raining across the red carpet.

A phalanx of twenty federal tactical marshals and twelve armed private security operators in dark suits flooded the room, securing every exit with raised assault weapons.

The five hundred guests froze mid-toast, the string quartet falling into dead silence as the room dropped into a state of stunned, breathless panic.

Walking down the center aisle through the swirling smoke was Dominic Sterling.

He was dressed in an impeccably tailored charcoal-gray three-piece suit, his posture straight, his presence radiating majestic, terrifying power.

Beside him walked Sarah Thornton, looking breathtaking in an elegant midnight-blue velvet gown, her chin held high with regal dignity.

And walking between us, holding both of our hands with radiant, fearless confidence, was six-year-old Lily Sterling, wearing an ivory silk dress and her golden dragon pin.

Julian’s triumphant smile rotted into pure, paralyzing horror, the champagne glass slipping from his paralyzed fingers and shattering violently on the stage.

Vivienne Thorne let out an ear-piercing gasp, clutching her diamond choker as her face turned the color of curdled cream.

“Good evening, Julian,” Dominic’s deep baritone resonated through the cavernous hall like a crack of thunder.

“I believe you are celebrating thirty minutes too early.”
