Chapter 6 - The Fortress on Beacon Hill

At dawn, our convoy arrived at the grand iron gates of the Sterling ancestral compound on Beacon Hill.

The fifty-acre estate was an impenetrable fortress of nineteenth-century granite, surrounded by twelve-foot reinforced security walls, thermal motion sensors, and fifty armed private operators.

Dominic carried Lily in his left arm, holding her securely against his chest while his right hand held mine as we walked up the grand limestone steps.

The interior of the mansion was breathtaking: towering vaulted ceilings, original Renaissance oil paintings, sweeping crystal chandeliers, and polished marble floors.

Lily gasped in pure, childlike wonder, pointing at the grand spiral staircase ascending four stories into the sunlit mezzanine.

“Is this a real castle, Mama?” Lily whispered in awe, clutching Dominic’s collar with her tiny fingers.

“It is your castle, my brave princess,” Dominic answered softly, nuzzling his cheek against her soft hair.

“Every room, every garden, and every toy inside these walls belongs to you.”

He led us to the private master family suite on the third floor—a sunlit pavilion that had been completely refurbished overnight by his staff.

The room was filled with colorful children’s books, a miniature wooden dollhouse, an enormous toy chest, and a hand-carved oak canopy bed draped in soft pink silk.

Lily let out a joyful squeak, sliding down from Dominic’s arms and sprinting across the plush wool rug to inspect the dollhouse.

She began arranging the miniature furniture, laughing pure, unburdened laughter that echoed off the mahogany walls like holy music.

I stood near the panoramic bay window overlooking the blooming autumn gardens, watching my daughter play in the sunlight.

Dominic walked up behind me, his hands resting gently on my shoulders, his warmth seeping through the fabric of my sweater.

“She is safe here, Sarah,” Dominic murmured into my ear, his voice thick with profound devotion.

“No assassin, no syndicate, and no evil will ever breach these gates.”

I turned in his arms, looking up into his sterling-gray eyes, seeing the man who had fought through hell and blood to bring us to this sanctuary.

“You have seventy-two hours before the probate deadline, Dominic,” I said softly, resting my hand against his cheek.

“Julian will use every corrupt judge and federal contact he owns to stop you from entering that boardroom.”

Dominic smiled, a fierce, predatory glint flashing in his dark eyes as he placed his hand over mine.

“Julian thinks he is fighting a crime lord who only knows how to shoot guns, Sarah.”

“He has no idea that he is about to face a father who is fighting for his daughter’s throne.”
