Chapter 4 - THE DEBT THAT DIDN'T BELONG TO ME

My father, Michael Bennett, had been dead four years when I married Luke.
He owned a small logistics company.
Not glamorous.
Not successful enough to interest the Morgans.
At least, that's what I believed.
Maya traced the forged guarantee.
Lender:
Russell Capital.
I stared.
“Russell?”
Vanessa Russell.
Her family.
The pieces shifted.
Vanessa wasn't simply Luke's old girlfriend.
Her father's company had created a false half-million-dollar liability in my name years before Vanessa ever walked back into our private club dinner.
“Did Luke know?”
Maya didn't answer.
We asked him.
He arrived at her office with no security detail and no attitude.
That alone told me something had changed.
I stayed in the conference room.
Not because I wanted reconciliation.
Because I wanted answers.
Luke stopped when he saw me.
His eyes dropped briefly to my stomach.
Nothing showed yet.
Still, he looked as if he'd been hit.
“Sophia.”
“Sit.”
He did.
Another novelty.
Maya placed the Russell Capital guarantee in front of him.
Luke read it.
His face tightened.
“What is this?”
“You tell me.”
“I've never seen it.”
“Vanessa's family company created it.”
He looked genuinely confused.
“Why?”
“That is becoming the question.”
Luke called Vanessa.
She answered.
He put her on speaker.
“Did you know Russell Capital held a guarantee under Sophia's name?”
Long silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
I almost expected pain.
Instead, I felt confirmation.
“How long?”
“Since before your wedding.”
Luke went white.
“You knew?”
“My father handled it.”
“Why?”
Vanessa exhaled.
“Because your mother asked him to.”
There it was.
Isabella again.
“Why would my mother need fake debt?”
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“To make sure Sophia could never control the trust.”
Luke stared at the table.
Vanessa continued.
“She didn't want the marriage.”
That wasn't news.
“She couldn't stop you.”
Also not news.
“So she built an exit.”
An exit.
My forged debt.
If Luke and I divorced before children?
The marriage ended.
If we had a child?
Isabella could use the guarantee to strip me of stewardship rights.
Elegant.
Cold.
Prepared years in advance.
Then I asked Vanessa:
“Why come back now?”
Silence.
“Vanessa.”
“Because Isabella called me.”
Luke's face changed.
“She asked you to come to dinner?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To remind you what your life could have looked like.”
That sentence was almost worse than an affair.
Isabella staged the dinner to destabilize my marriage.
Vanessa admitted she agreed because part of her still loved Luke.
At least she was honest.
Then she said:
“But that isn't why I'm scared.”
I looked at her.
“What are you scared of?”
“My father didn't create only one fake guarantee.”
Russell Capital had produced eleven questionable family-liability instruments over twenty years.
All connected to spouses marrying into major wealthy families.
Someone had been manufacturing financial leverage as a business.
May you like
And according to Vanessa, Isabella wasn't the mastermind.
Grant Morgan was.
