Chapter 1 - I DIDN'T LEAVE ALONE

By the time Luke Morgan learned I had filed for divorce, I was already forty miles outside Chicago.
And there were two heartbeats inside my body.
Mine.
And the eleven-week-old baby Luke knew nothing about.
I had found out nine days earlier.
I hadn't told him because every time I tried, something came first.
A board call.
His mother.
A dinner.
A delayed flight.
Then Vanessa returned.
And watching Luke remember her sparkling water while forgetting everything about me clarified something pregnancy had made me terrified to admit.
A baby could not repair a marriage where the mother already felt invisible.
I checked into a small furnished apartment in Evanston under my maiden name.
Maya had arranged the lease.
Nobody from the Morgan family knew the address.
At least, that was the plan.
At 7:02 the next morning, Luke called.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Then Maya texted me.
He's been served.
I stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
He wants to know if you're safe.
I almost laughed.
For three years, Luke rarely asked where I went unless his schedule required me somewhere.
Now my absence had made me visible.
I typed:
I'm safe. No direct contact.
Then came a message from Luke's sister, Amelia.
SOPHIA, DO NOT TELL ISABELLA ABOUT THE BABY.
My entire body went cold.
I hadn't told Amelia.
Nobody knew except Maya and my obstetrician.
I called immediately.
“How do you know?”
Silence.
Then Amelia whispered:
“Because Mom knows.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“How?”
“I don't know.”
“Amelia.”
“She showed me something last night.”
“What?”
“A medical bill.”
My stomach dropped.
The prenatal bloodwork.
I had paid personally.
Or thought I had.
Amelia continued.
“Mom said she knew you were pregnant before the dinner.”
I couldn't breathe.
That meant Isabella had watched me announce my divorce while already knowing I carried a Morgan child.
No wonder she looked afraid.
“Why didn't she say anything?”
Amelia's answer was quieter.
“Because she wasn't afraid you'd leave Luke.”
A pause.
“She was afraid you'd take the baby with you.”
Then Amelia said something that made my skin go cold.
“Sophia, there is a clause in the Morgan family trust about Luke's first biological child.”
I closed my eyes.
Of course there was.
“What clause?”
“I don't know all of it.”
“Then what do you know?”
“If that child is born while Luke is legally married, the mother gets temporary voting rights over part of the family holdings.”
I stared at the bare apartment wall.
My divorce wasn't only ending a marriage.

If Isabella was right, it could change who controlled the Morgan empire.
And suddenly, my unborn child had become a financial event.
