Chapter 9 - GABRIEL HAD BEEN SENT TO PICK HER UP

Lauren stared at him.
“By who?”
Gabriel looked toward David.
David already knew.
Lauren saw it immediately.
“Dad?”
David exhaled.
“Yes.”
Her father had sent Gabriel.
He had intercepted part of Harrison’s Christmas plan through an old Whitmore contact.
But he could not come himself without revealing that he was alive.
So he called Gabriel.
Told him the accounts would freeze.
Told him Lauren would likely leave by four.
Told him exactly where to wait.
Lauren’s anger returned.
“So even my rescue was planned.”
Gabriel flinched.
“That’s fair.”
“No, it’s not.”
She stood.
“I am tired of men deciding where I need to be and calling it protection.”
David spoke softly.
“You’re right.”
The room went quiet.
No defense.
That helped more than explanation.
Lauren sat again.
“From now on, nobody moves me. Nobody moves my children. Nobody accesses my information without asking me.”
Gabriel nodded.
David nodded.
Even Cole, when informed later, agreed.
Then Lauren took over.
Not emotionally.
Logistically.
She asked investigators for every piece of evidence.
Created a timeline.
Separated what they knew from what they assumed.
Something bothered her.
Harrison was ruthless.
But methodical.
Why would he keep an incriminating Christmas schedule in a basement?
Too obvious.
She asked for handwriting analysis.
It was Madison’s.
Not Harrison’s.
Then Madison finally surrendered.
She walked into a Manhattan precinct carrying a lawyer’s card.
And a bruise around her throat.
Lauren watched remotely as Madison gave her statement.
Harrison had controlled her for years.
Her father, Dr. Ames, had worked for him.
After Caleb’s death, Harrison paid Madison’s tuition.
Gave her a job.
Then threatened to expose her father’s crimes whenever she resisted.
Madison had participated in the Christmas setup.
Account freeze.
Photograph leak.
Medical paperwork.
But not the planned abduction.
“That was Harrison?” the detective asked.
Madison shook her head.
“No.”
“Who?”
She started crying.
“Cole.”
Lauren went cold.
Again.
But Madison clarified.
Not Cole Whitmore.
Cole’s cousin.
Evan Cole Whitmore.
Everyone called him Evan.
Harrison’s nephew.
Head of Whitmore Capital’s private risk division.
Lauren had met him twice.
Quiet.
Forgettable.
Exactly the kind of man no one watched.
Evan had prepared the apartment intrusion.
He wanted Lauren and the twins physically removed.
Why?
Madison explained.
Because Harrison’s legal strategy was too slow.
Evan wanted the trust without court oversight.
He planned to take Lauren abroad, force signatures, and stage disappearance.
“Harrison knew?”
Madison hesitated.
“Not at first.”
“At first?”
“He found out.”
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
“And stopped him?”
Madison looked down.
“No.”
Lauren understood.
Harrison had not designed the most violent plan.
He simply allowed it once it became useful.
Then Madison handed investigators a flash drive.
Evan’s financial records.
Millions moved from Whitmore Capital to private accounts.
He had been stealing while pretending to protect the family.
And one transaction stood out.
Payment to a private airfield.
Departure scheduled that night.
Passengers listed:
Evan Whitmore.
Lauren Whitmore.
Eli Whitmore.
May you like
Emma Whitmore.
The plane was still waiting.
