Chapter 4 - THEIR MARRIAGE HAD STARTED WITH A FILE

Lauren did not slap him.

That surprised everyone.

Especially Cole.

She only asked:

“How long before?”

He looked exhausted.

“Eight months.”

They had met ten months before the proposal.

Which meant almost their entire relationship had occurred after he knew.

“How did you find out?”

“My father.”

Harrison Whitmore had shown Cole a confidential file on David Monroe’s trust.

Lauren’s father had created the trust after disappearing.

That fact alone nearly stopped her breathing.

“My father created it?”

“Yes.”

“So Dad was alive after the plane crash.”

Cole nodded.

“When was the trust funded?”

“Over years.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

Gabriel answered.

“Whistleblower settlement money.”

Everyone looked at him.

David had secretly provided information to multiple federal investigations involving financial crimes unrelated to Whitmore Capital.

Some cases settled.

Some assets were recovered.

Rewards, protected compensation, and investments grew.

David placed most of it in trust for Lauren.

He wanted her financially independent from anyone tied to the Whitmores.

The irony nearly broke her.

She had married directly into them.

Cole stepped closer.

“I didn’t marry you for the money.”

“How fortunate that you knew about eighty-four million dollars and simply forgot to mention it.”

“I loved you.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“And Sierra?”

His silence confirmed everything.

Gabriel moved away, giving them space.

Lauren appreciated that.

Cole rubbed his face.

“The affair started four months ago.”

“While I was pregnant?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He looked miserable.

“I don’t have an answer that helps.”

At least that was honest.

Then Lauren asked the question that mattered.

“Did you file the guardianship petition?”

“No.”

“Your signature is on it.”

“My father used my authorization.”

“Did you know he planned to?”

Cole hesitated.

That was enough.

“You knew something.”

“He said he was protecting the family from legal complications if you became unstable after delivery.”

Lauren laughed once.

“Unstable.”

“I argued with him.”

“But you didn’t tell me.”

“No.”

“Because?”

Cole looked away.

“Because Drexel Bank was calling our loans.”

Lauren frowned.

Gabriel did not.

He knew.

Whitmore Capital was in trouble.

Not publicly.

Privately.

Harrison had leveraged company assets against several real-estate projects that were collapsing.

If Lauren’s trust vested while she remained independent, Whitmore Capital could not touch it.

If she became incapacitated and Cole gained temporary management authority—

Nathan—no, Gabriel—finished the thought.

“They could pledge portions of marital distributions as collateral.”

Cole nodded.

Lauren stared.

“My husband’s family was preparing to use my money to save their company.”

“It was Dad.”

“And you?”

Cole looked at her.

“I did nothing.”

“That is not the defense you think it is.”

He lowered his head.

Then Lauren remembered Sierra.

“Does she know?”

Cole’s face changed.

“No.”

“Who is she?”

“Communications consultant.”

“For Whitmore Capital?”

“Yes.”

Gabriel stepped closer.

“Full name?”

“Sierra Bennett.”

Gabriel went still.

Lauren noticed.

“What?”

He opened his phone.

Typed.

Then turned the screen.

Sierra Bennett.

Thirty-two.

Public relations strategist.

Former legal researcher.

Daughter of—

Lauren stared.

GABRIEL MERCER.

She looked at him.

“Sierra is your daughter?”

Gabriel’s face had gone pale.

“Yes.”

Cole stared.

“You didn’t know?”

“No.”

Lauren felt the room tilt again.

Gabriel’s daughter was sleeping with Cole.

Gabriel had been following Lauren.

Her father was missing.

Harrison wanted the trust.

Nothing was separate.

Then Gabriel received a message.

From Sierra.

One sentence:

DAD, I FOUND DAVID.

May you like

And beneath it:

HE SAYS LAUREN ISN’T SAFE WITH YOU EITHER.
