Chapter 10 - THE PLANE HAD THREE EMPTY SEATS

Federal agents reached the airfield first.
Evan was not there.
The aircraft was.
Inside were baby supplies.
Lauren’s forged passport.
Two infant passports she had never applied for.
Sedatives.
A wheelchair.
Clothing in her size.
Everything prepared.
Nothing impulsive.
This plan had been months in the making.
Then agents found a destination.
Monaco.
A jurisdiction Evan apparently believed would buy him time.
Lauren looked at the documents.
“He expected me alive.”
“Yes,” Gabriel said.
“Why?”
David answered.
“Signatures.”
Some portions of the trust could not be moved under duress easily.
But other marital companies could.
Evan planned to force Lauren into executing documents before her thirty-fifth birthday.
Then make her disappear.
Lauren thought she had reached the limit of horror.
She hadn’t.
The twins’ passports contained genuine biometric data.
Fingerprints were impossible at their age, but photographs matched images taken at their pediatrician’s office.
Someone inside the medical system had supplied them.
Lauren asked:
“Who authorized release?”
The answer:
Cole.
His digital signature.
Again.
He denied it.
Again.
This time, forensic analysis showed the signature originated from his actual laptop.
Not cloned.
Cole looked devastated.
“I didn’t do it.”
Lauren said nothing.
Then Sierra remembered something.
She had used Cole’s laptop at the Langham.
Not for the affair.
To access files.
She had briefly left the suite while Cole showered.
During that window, someone entered.
Hotel hallway footage showed Madison.
She accessed the laptop.
Cloned credentials.
Everything connected.
Cole was guilty of betrayal.
Cowardice.
Financial silence.
But not kidnapping.
Lauren found herself strangely relieved.
Not for the marriage.
That was over.
But because the father of her children had not ordered their abduction.
Then Harrison Whitmore requested a meeting.
Through attorneys.
Lauren refused.
He offered a written confession.
She accepted the writing, not the meeting.
The document admitted:
He knew about the trust.
He froze the accounts.
He approved the psychiatric plan.
He knew Madison was manipulating evidence.
He learned Evan intended to remove Lauren and the twins.
He did not stop him.
Why?
Because Harrison believed he could regain control after Evan frightened Lauren into cooperation.
Arrogance at a scale Lauren could barely comprehend.
Then Harrison included one final claim.
Evan was not acting alone.
A partner had financed the Monaco operation.
Someone who wanted half the trust.
Someone Lauren trusted.
The attached account records named:
Gabriel Mercer.
Lauren looked up slowly.
Gabriel did not defend himself immediately.
That was the worst possible reaction.
“Tell me.”
He closed his eyes.
“The account is mine.”
David stood.
“What?”
Gabriel raised both hands.
“I funded a transfer.”
“How much?”
“Two million.”
Lauren’s voice became ice.
“For Evan?”
“No.”
“For Sierra.”
Sierra looked shocked.
“What?”
Gabriel had secretly created an escape fund after discovering Sierra’s affair with Cole and her investigation into Harrison.
He transferred two million through an intermediary.
The intermediary was Evan.
Gabriel thought Evan was helping Sierra disappear safely if Harrison retaliated.
Instead, Evan used the money to fund the aircraft, documents, and abduction plan.
Gabriel had unknowingly financed the kidnapping.

Lauren stared at him.
The man who saved her from the sidewalk had also paid for the plane meant to take her away.
