Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO ACTUALLY OWNED THE EMPIRE

The room went silent.
Ethan stared at Michael.
“That’s impossible.”
“No,” Michael said. “It was hidden.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Show me.”
Michael produced a second agreement.
Robert Bennett’s original funding had contained an anti-dilution clause.
If Mercer Development transferred protected assets without consent from the Bennett Trust, additional voting rights automatically activated.
Ethan’s attempted restructuring had triggered it.
Daniel read the document twice.
Then looked at me.
“Claire now controls fifty-one percent.”
I almost laughed.
Two days earlier, Ethan had told me to leave his house.
Now, technically, I could remove him as CEO.
Ethan seemed to understand the same thing.
“I didn’t know.”
Michael scoffed.
“You never know anything until it costs you.”
Ethan turned on him.
“Where have you been for nine years?”
Michael’s expression hardened.
“Surviving what Dad did to both of us.”
The story came out slowly.
Richard Mercer had staged Michael’s death after Michael discovered a network of shell companies used to hide illegal money.
Years later, Vanessa found Michael.
She promised to help expose everything.
Instead, she used his identity.
“You worked with her?” Ethan asked.
“At first.”
Michael looked ashamed.
“She told me she wanted revenge on you.”
“For what?”
“For leaving her.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“That was ten years ago.”
“For you.”
Michael glanced at me.
“For Vanessa, rejection became a religion.”
“She stole eleven million.”
“More.”
“How much?”
“Twenty-seven.”
Daniel swore softly.
“And Graham?”
“Graham handles the transfers.”
I folded my arms.
“And what do they want from me?”
Michael looked toward the door before answering.
“Control.”
“Of what?”
“The Bennett Trust owns land beneath three of Ethan’s most profitable developments.”
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded slowly.
“If Claire controls those parcels…”
“She can block refinancing,” Michael said. “Sales. Redevelopment. Everything.”
Ethan looked sick.
“So Vanessa needed Claire gone.”
“Not gone.”
Michael met my eyes.
“Unstable.”
A chill crawled across my skin.
“What does that mean?”
“They’ve spent months building a record that you’re emotionally unreliable during pregnancy.”
Every argument.
Every time Vanessa provoked me.
Every moment Ethan dismissed me.
“You helped her,” I whispered.
Michael looked down.
“At first, I thought Ethan deserved to lose everything.”
“And me?”
“I didn’t know they were targeting you until two weeks ago.”
Ethan moved toward him.
“If she touched Claire—”
“She already did.”
Michael pulled out his phone.
A recording played.
Vanessa’s voice.
“If Claire leaves the house voluntarily, that helps us. Ethan will lose his temper. He always does.”
Graham laughed.
“And once she’s out?”
“We file the competency challenge after the baby is born.”
My hands went cold.
Ethan looked shattered.
Because he understood.
Vanessa hadn’t just manipulated him.
She had studied him.
His temper.
His pride.
His need for control.
Then weaponized every weakness against me.
Michael stopped the recording.
“There’s more.”
“What?”
His gaze locked onto Ethan.
“Vanessa isn’t finished.”
My phone buzzed.
A photograph appeared.
My nursery.
Lily’s crib.
Taken from inside our house less than five minutes earlier.
Beneath it:
May you like
COME HOME, CLAIRE.
