Chapter 11 - THE CONFESSION

Ethan didn’t move for almost ten seconds.
Then he crossed the room.
I stepped between them.
“Ethan.”
His entire body shook.
“Move, Claire.”
“No.”
“He killed my father.”
“Your father abused both of you.”
“That doesn’t answer me.”
Michael’s voice broke.
“I didn’t plan it.”
Ethan stopped.
Michael told us the truth.
Richard Mercer had tracked Robert Bennett to a cabin outside Boone.
Michael was there.
So was Vanessa.
Richard arrived armed.
He wanted the trust documents.
There was a fight.
Richard pointed a gun at Robert.
Michael tackled him.
The gun fired.
Richard fell through a glass door and struck his head on stone.
He died instantly.
Michael panicked.
Robert helped hide the circumstances because Michael was already legally dead.
“And Vanessa?” I asked.
“She saw everything.”
There it was.
The final source of her power.
For years, Vanessa blackmailed Michael.
When she needed signatures, identities, access, or silence, she threatened to expose him.
Ethan sank into a chair.
“My entire family was built on lies.”
I sat several feet away.
“Not all of it.”
He looked at me.
“You gave me Lily.”
His eyes dropped to my stomach.
“And I nearly destroyed that too.”
A contraction tightened across my abdomen.
I inhaled sharply.
Ethan noticed immediately.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Claire.”
Another pain came.
Stronger.
Daniel stood.
“How far apart?”
“They’re not contractions.”
They were.
Seven months pregnant.
Too early.
Within twenty minutes, we were racing toward the hospital.
The pain intensified.
Ethan sat beside me in the back seat but didn’t touch me until I reached for him.
Then his hand locked around mine.
“Stay with me.”
“I’m here.”
“No.”
Tears filled his eyes.
“Claire, stay.”
The hospital admitted me immediately.
Doctors stopped the contractions.
Lily’s heartbeat remained strong.
But I needed observation.
Ethan remained outside my room because I had not invited him inside.
At 3:16 in the morning, I woke and saw him through the glass.
Sitting alone.
Head bowed.
Still wearing the same shirt.
A nurse entered.
“Your husband hasn’t moved in five hours.”
I looked away.
“He’s stubborn.”
“He looks scared.”
“He should be.”
The nurse adjusted my IV.
Then quietly said, “There’s another woman downstairs asking about you.”
My heart accelerated.
“Who?”
“Vanessa Reed.”
Security detained her.
Inside her purse, police found a passport, thirty thousand dollars in cash, and a flash drive.
She had been preparing to flee.
But the biggest surprise was inside the hospital envelope she carried.
A DNA test.
Graham was not the father of Vanessa’s baby.
May you like
Neither was Ethan.
According to the report, the biological father was Michael Mercer.
